KD... Butch... you are aware there were children around with the gun fire... so you realize there were children to protect. Climbing into a closet with a phone would mean you are unable to reach those children quickly should the bad guys come into the house further. If all who were in the house could be rounded up quietly and put in a safe spot, cool... but that would be too risky in my opinion.

I know your parental pain to some degree. I had one mentally ill, self medicating and who is now brain damaged and in my care. I think I do understand that pain and the fear before his brain damage, of what might happen. For the last year of it, we were all tortured with it and trying to protect him and society. The way it turned out, society was okay, he was not and believe me when I say... I would rather him not come out of it than for him to have done harm to another. A home invasion is harmful even if no fireplay is a part of it. Your safe place has been violated and many may never feel safe in their own home again. My child verses someone else's child... this type of situation... I am sad to say, but honestly saying... I would rather mine go down than someone else at his hands or from his choices.

Thanks Lockit..we have talked before and I do hope you and the family are doing well... But have you noticed how you and others are only coming up with excuses with why something will not work except shooting someone?

The lady told me she had only one room...that is why I said a closet would be the best bet...they could all get in there...still with a gun if they had to use it.

If you say there is no time with them breaking in the door then think ahead and get some good dead bolts that will slow the break in down and give them time to get in the closet. If they broke in without dead bolts she would not have had time to get a gun...unless she has one loaded around her kids… not a good idea. Can you not see with a plan where they would have a much better chance then blasting away?

Butch

I was talking the original setting that the op spoke about. Everyone keeps saying hide, call police and there were just too many in the house to do that safely for everyone. Being prepared to blast away is one thing... having to blast away... with someone not complying... well... blast away. It is you or them in a situation like that. You protect your homefront and family.

The family is doing well, thank you. I even got to hear him talk the other night... eyes open, but he was out of it and didn't remember not to talk! I get that joy about once a year.

I do hope things work out for your daughter! Hang in there!

A gun is a far more more deadly and efficient killing machine than any of the examples you mentioned.

Hell once those phasers get here we will be talking about guns about as much as we currently talk about muskets. If there is one thing humans are about is killing efficiently. Ah the days of rocks and sticks with stone tips.

Yeah, that'll keep'em from busting a window. [:D]

You could be right and of course I am projecting alternatives… otherwise what is there to talk about. Some of these projected alternatives may help someone else in the future.

You yourself do not know the situation of the burglar or his parents...so you are projecting no less than me. You are doing in my opinion all-together to much assuming you know all the circumstances.

But I don't fault you for it...It is just us talking about what happened...what could have happened...and what we should all do to protect ourselves in the future.

And I do thank you for your understanding. No one likes to tell people they have a troubled child.

Butch

Those steel scissors grates are hideous. They would ruin the value of my property. But wrought iron could be stylish. Only they can't be fixed. Fire reguations. No locks, either. They have to open. Those steel gratings have a quick release thing that can't be operated from the outside. I don't know of any wrought iron window gates with that feature. I'd be willing to look, though. When can I expect your check?

Well...Depends on who you ask.

MasterJimUK -> RE: Defended my home (12/9/2009 5:06:03 PM)

Lots of politics in this.

I would not keep a gun in my property. I fear accidents hurting my own loved ones or the effects of a bullet going through a wall.
It does seem to keep breaks in very low in the US.

And I have no sympathy for the guy who got shot.
As soon as he breaks into someones house with a weapon in his pocket he deserves everything he gets.

If you have children in the house that does make the situation very difficult. It must have been a very traumatic.
And i can understand why you would want to advance to a point where you were 100% sure you and your gun were between him and all of your family.

I've heard a few horror stories about people shooting their own family in these situations.

I'm just glad the right guy got shot. And Kudos the OP for having the courage. Thats one career criminal who won't be coming through anyones back doors in a while.

But remember one of the options was to get in a closet with a cell... May be better than finding a gun...loading it...then having a gun battle with the kids around...but each to their own I guess...You could also have the gun in the closet for just such an occasion..sounds like a good plan to me.

You aren't reading me. One room, and my cell does NOT work inside my home.
As for finding and loading the gun, it's already loaded and within reach. Before I get "blasted", there are NO children on this property and no close neighbors with kids.

Bet with a bit of practice you could knock the fucker out with your cell [:D]

Lockit -> RE: Defended my home (12/9/2009 5:29:11 PM)

LOL Zeph... if someone figures out how to do that one... I wanna know! That's better than my disposable razor trick!

Well okay maybe not knock him out, but at least stun him til she can get a bead on him.

And waste a perfectly good cell phone? Nah, I'd hit him with my piggy bank. Sucker has about $50 in change in it and weighs a ton [:D]

Ils s'en foutent. Ce sont tous des cons finis: ils aiment les armes plus que les hommes.

I already addressed the closet thing (mine are like big cabinets. Even if I could get my fat ass into one with all my stuff, I wouldn't be able to move), and why do you assume I have kids? I don't.
