KD... Butch... you are aware there were children around with the gun fire... so you realize there were children to protect. Climbing into a closet with a phone would mean you are unable to reach those children quickly should the bad guys come into the house further. If all who were in the house could be rounded up quietly and put in a safe spot, cool... but that would be too risky in my opinion. I know your parental pain to some degree. I had one mentally ill, self medicating and who is now brain damaged and in my care. I think I do understand that pain and the fear before his brain damage, of what might happen. For the last year of it, we were all tortured with it and trying to protect him and society. The way it turned out, society was okay, he was not and believe me when I say... I would rather him not come out of it than for him to have done harm to another. A home invasion is harmful even if no fireplay is a part of it. Your safe place has been violated and many may never feel safe in their own home again. My child verses someone else's child... this type of situation... I am sad to say, but honestly saying... I would rather mine go down than someone else at his hands or from his choices.
