Ok... I confess. I don't get the appeal of Tiffany's. I don't have anything *against* them. I just don't get the obession that some women have with Tiffany's. I like nice, pretty, expensive things as much as the next girl but I really prefer to go to a local jeweler. Granted, I am not familiar with Tiffany's but it seems like they sell mass-produced pricey things and I'd rather get something where at least not a hundred other girls in my city have my expensive new necklace as well.

Maybe I've gotten the wrong impression about how Tiffany's works. Maybe I'm just weird. But since I'm running on 0 sleep and caffine, I'm making a thread about it and reaching out to others to help me understand the Tiffany obession!

And if there are typos in this post I don't care! MUAHAHAHAHA!

It's all about the robin's egg blue gift box - oh, and this .

I like Tiffany's. I have nothing by them, but sweet dreams are made of this  .

See, I have *always* known that my engagement ring wouldn't come from Tiffany's. I always knew exactly what store I wanted my hubby to go to in my hometown with the jeweler who has worked with my family since I was a kid. And, surprise surprise, that is exactly what happened!

When I moved to San Francisco, one of the first places I went was Tiffany's.  In the back room were the most incredible gemstones I have ever seen in my life.  The clarity of the colors made them seem almost fake.  But they weren't.  They were real rubies & emeralds & sapphires & diamonds, oh my!!  I bought a beautiful sterling silver teething ring for a co-worker's baby there & it was quite reasonably priced.

Recently, we found out how gold is mined in Africa.  Horrid conditions.  Tiffany's guarantees that all of their gold is mined in conflict-free places.  That would make it even more attractive to me.  Frankly, I love Tiffany's!!

That's really cool :-) . But if you're a nomad, like me, and you don't have a family jeweller, then Tiffany's is where it's at.

My engagement ring doesn't come from there either, but from a New England jeweller - it's nice, but I'd like to add just a couple of teeny weeny lil Ds on either side. I like a solitaire, but he's feeling lonely  .

Ok, see this I can get behind! I wasn't aware that they did that.

I actually have never been to Tiffanys but had a look online after my ex told me how he would have spoilt his ex from there...well...nothing from there crossed ever my way in real life and that can stay that way....am not really attracted to posh stuff anyway....

LOL - call me a brat but one of the first things I did after realizing I was going to stick around in NC was to find a great local jeweler that isn't part of a chain. Which was really funny when I was a freshman art major buying my Mom a somewhat pricy gift (in the hundred dollar range) in tattered shorts and paint-stained shirt. Eh... what can I say... I was lazy then...

I am not big on brand for anything. I have three personal jewelers that I've used over the years.

One is a woman I will call S, that designs and makes custom pieces in addition to owning a company that produces pieces for resale. Several of my most important pieces are her creations. Including the 3.76 carat diamond ring I wear most days and a pendant of various gems that makes me think of a beautiful stained glass window, is too large and opulent to wear to work. She is also responsible for most of my gold jewelry.

A previous lover gave me several platinum and diamond Winston pieces but I've never purchased anything from them myself.

Then there is a couple that owns a company that has made almost all of my silver pieces that I've purchased new.

I also have a big collection of older pieces, especially old American Indian turquoise. I began collecting that when I was still in my teens and have some amazing and rare pieces.

For simple repairs, I use a local guy. He owns a jewelry shop here but local shops rarely have pieces that I've been interested in purchasing. It is just too small a market to support that kind of shop. If the repair required was extensive or costly, the piece would go to S. I've an antique 4c diamond solitaire ring that was given to me. If I needed work done on that, she would be the only one to touch it.

Unfortunately, my bling budget is zero, zip, nada...these days so I've not bought anything in several years. At least nothing substantial that stands out in my mind. I think I will survive it...

Yeah, somehow my parents also managed well that my brother and I were never attracted to it...heck he even went that far that a friend from his wife made herself the wedding rings for them...

I rescind that statement. There is ALWAYS room in my jewelry dresser for a new friend.

Also, for all jewelry lovers, I recommend Elizabeth Taylor's coffee table book about her collection.

It would have to fight with my Spider-Man coffee table book... I'm not sure which  would win.

Elizabeth Taylor versus Spidey...........pfffftttt. One good left with the Krupp diamond and Spidey would crumble.

Nah. Being married to Mary Jane has allowed him to build-up a tolerence for fancy jewelry.

(Seriously one of the cutest issues I have has him trying to figure out what to get her for Valentine's cause she's got tons of jewelry and sexy underwear already.)

Not for long...and it is a slow, hideous decline. Right before they kick the bucket most women do strange things such as talking to horses, calling a shot of booze a "jigger", and looking forward to all the semi-obnoxious relations coming over for the holidays.....
They fail to realize they are on borrowed time. Hopefully the obnoxious relatives are also pack-rats and saved the receipts for the gifts they gave her.
Sad...lemme tell ya.

I must now scamper off to jewelry shop on E-Bay....life is too precious not to. And damn...the vicodin is kicking my silly ass.

the most BLING kinda thing I have is my wedding ring.  WHen I DO wear jewelry, it's primarily sterling silver rings.  The only Tiffany thing I have is a padlock charm that I (and several others here) got as gifts.

I dont understand the obsesssion for bling.
