I am lucky enough to have a ridiculously generous man and a ridiculously talented relative that is renowned for his amazing custom jewelry. I admit it, I love jewelry, and I love custom pieces. I would rather get one killer piece a year than a bunch of trinkets all year long. My new collar which is in my profile pics, is one that my love designed in collaberation with Jacob and it is a pendant in the shape of the Maine coast where I am from with a large diamond in the city of my birth, 18k gold, with a gorgeous 18K collar. I love it. For my birthday, he gave me one of Jacob's custom bracelets with diamonds and peridot. *My birthstone.

Here is the link to Jacob's pieces, warning they are stunning. :-)

Aynne, thank you for sharing that link. I adore jewelry. I don't have to own it to love it. Just looking at it feeds something in me....weird I know. It was that way with the pendant I spoke of. It is a cross, very old world looking. Lord knows I don't see any deeper meaning to the shape of it but the beauty of it just envelopes me every time I take it out of it's box. I wouldn't care if I didn't own it, if I could look at it and hold it whenever I wanted.

Now I am going to go perv your profile to get a better look at your collar.

You are most welcome LeAnne. I need to get a better picture of it, the one on their doesn't do it justice but it will do for now. Of course the bruised arms only add to it. . Twas a fun day.

I always knew you really loved fine jewelry, I think we have discussed that before. It's definitely my weakness as well. The nice part is a lot of mine I have purchased myself, somehow those ones are truly special to me.

There are certain brands of clothes that I prefer (which are definately very expensive) but I've found that they last FOREVER without showing signs of wear as long as they are properly taken care of. So I can understand brand name for clothing - depending on the specific label.

I can say the same thing about my non- designer clothes. I take good care of them and they last forever. I tend to buy my clothes at either Old Navy or American Apparel, simply because the clothes there are so comfortable

Honestly, I have never had good luck with Old Navy or American Apparel. I prefer New York and Co, Talbet's, Kohl's or Doncaster when I have several hundred dollars to blow on one piece. Which I almost never do but they look soooo good and they last soooo long.

And Aynne, those pieces are positively gorgous!!! *drools*

The trick of it is the care. I never, ever put my clothes in the dryer, they are hung up in the bathroom. Honestly I still have clothes I bought 15 years ago which look almost brand new and none of it is designer. I'm not criticising you but somehow I just can't bring myself to spend hundreds of dollars on one piece of clothing. On the other hand, on the top floor of one of our department stores is a sellout centre. Designer pieces marked down 50-70%. On top of that there are sales there of an additional 50-70%, I once found a Liz Claiborne sweater there for $37. Yeah I bought it, I'm not stupid

For the cost of one designer piece I can buy a whole wardrobe at ON or AA. I simply cannot justify buying one piece, no way.

Zeph

As far as clothing I think it depends on several issues. Name brand does not ALWAYS mean quality. Nor does amount spent. I look at it this way. Is the item in question going to be a fad that is only seasonal? If so, not something to spend a lot of money on. Is the item something that I will wear to work? If so, definitely not something to spend a lot of money on (ink has a way of jumping onto clothing in a printing company). And, does the quality match or exceed the price in my eyes? I don't care if it's a Ralph Lauren, if it's made cheaper or equal in quality to a t-shirt I can get from a discount store for less than $10, I am buying the $10 one.

I have coats, timeless designs, that I've owned for almost 20 years. I look at some shoes the same way, especially boots. Sneakers, I buy well made but moderately prices because I am on my feet a lot, but wear them out fast. Jeans, there is NO WAY I am buying expensive jeans, just no way. I use them, they are not a fashion statement. If I spend more than $20 on a pair, I've spent too much. Sunglasses, rarely more than $15.00. I do not need prescription shades, I have a habit of losing and breaking them regularly. I am not careful with them and don't want to be. Jewelry, that is something I will have all my life and can hand on to someone else to appreciate. I don't mind spending more and ignoring most costume jewelry. However........I have bought a few costume pieces that were very much a fad. No reason to spend a lot of money on something that will be unwearable in a year.

One of the places I plan to visit over the holidays will be Tiffanys.  I remember when I first moved to the east coast and took my first day trip to NYC, I wandered into some of the well-know stores on my way to Central Park and Tiffanys was one of them.  Overwhelming for a fresh from the midwest country mouse who's idea of diamonds was what she saw at the mall jewerly stores.

I've had my eye on a pair of  earrings but the price is a bit steep for me.  I'm a window shopper, I guess.
Nothing wrong with taking the time to look and dream of blue boxes with white bows

I know why. Its too much for some people. You have to hunt for good stuff. Peice by piece to get something well made and priced well. For me its fun. For some, its a pain.

The Bloomingdale's on Michigan Avenue is the PLACE for bargain hunting! $10 Ralph Lauren shirts! Etc. I have a lot of nice stuff and sure didn't pay full price for it. It also helps to be size-tag blind. I really don't care if my down coat says "2X" it's a great down coat, it was on sale, and so what if a real 2X person could never wear it? I do!

I think Tiffany's is a status thing. I bet you don't find many people showing off their engagement ring (or whatever) and "not" including that it came from Tiffany's. My granddaughter got a baby spoon from her great Aunt from Tiffany's. Tell me that's not status, cause I'm sure she never used the darn thing. It's probably still in "the" blue box it came in

Now, that being said. If I were to receive something from Tiffany's, you bet your sweet bippy I'd include "and it's from Tiffany's"

Tiffany's never meant to me what it does to so many, but then i am not a huge jewelry person. I am not a diamond girl either, but i do enjoy emeralds. My preference of diamonds are that i would rather have a green diamond -- however, i am not picky, i enjoy many of the diamonds of color but colorless diamonds have never really done it for me. I think the brown ones are gorgeous as are the champagne ones. However, the Tiffany Diamond is phenominal in its beauty.

Piffle. All I want is a tiny diamond to wear in My nose piercing, and craploads of money to spend at Hot Topic and Spencer's, and I'll be good to go, seriously.

Oh I don't mind hunting. I just never really find anything I like in there that is well made and fits right. I have very particular styles that it a bit harder to find clothing I like. To the point where I don't like waiting for things to go on sale and risk not getting something I truly loved that I would have gotten my money's worth. I love sales hunting but regard finding something as a bonus and if I truly love an item... I simply find a way to be able to afford it.

Definately get one. My Mom had one made for me one years and years ago and I've never taken it out or changed the jewelry since. She went to the jeweler we've gone to for forever and said it was much, much cheaper than she expected to pay since it's just a tiny chip of a diamond. It's very tasteful (I think anyway!) and people tend to just think it's a bit of glitter on my nose. Valyraen forgets I even have a nose piercing!
