Journalism has always had the biases of the owners and reporters embedded, however unintentionally.

We're talking about two entirely different things.

Everything you/I/the next man writes is underpinned by our personal experiences. That's a given.

The bed housing big business/the media/government is an altogether different matter. This is not a matter of personal experience - but rather a matter of keeping everything neat and tidy so the audience don't get above their collective station.

NG, I think that's why we have "investigative reporters" in the U.S. so that people *do* get above their "collective station."

Isn't that the line they feed you?....."land of the the free".....so you're busy congratulating yourselves while they help themselves? Hey we have the same bollocks over here...."land of hope and glory" and all that........

US reporting of Israel/Palestine.......you seem to be totally out of sync with the rest of the world.....maybe you're closer to the mark and everyone else is wide of the mark......though accounts from Israelis themselves suggests US reporting is shabby.

Then there's the propaganda department set up by the US government with the intention of getting US citizens on board for meddling in Nicaraguan affairs....they made the Sandinistas look like a crack out fit when the reality is they didn't have a pot to piss in....your President made a tele appearance warning of the impending doom.....and it all worked of course.

Don't get me wrong here.....that's government....and that's media.....the world over.....perhaps the difference is that when our lot do it it's a case of: "fuck's sake....not this shite again".

As far as I'm aware British journalism is celebrated the world over......as witnessed via the popularity of the BBC.....but there a lot of things that they will not report. Your man Chomsky has it all boxed off when it comes to the BBC.

Hang on a second here... the internet and blogs don't discover news, they are opinions. None of today's bloggers have investigative reporters actually finding out new things to inform the public, they get their 'news' from newspapers and /or self serving 'leaks' just like everyone else. Not mentioning anywhere i could see in this thread the corporatization of media and consolidation of media seems to me to be missing the whole issue.

There used to be a journalism professor in California who published a ten most under reported stories of the year every year... I looked for something current from him and couldn't find it so maybe he has stopped, but from the late 70's on through at least into the 90's the consolidation of media was on the list EVERY YEAR... When America's news sources are owned by the big businesses that are controlling the government there is no 'freedom of the press' All of today's media play lip service to anti big business stories. what a shock!!

I truly agree that an informed public is critical to the survival of the US, but honestly I don't see how that is going to happen now. You are not going to see individual newspapers or TV stations taking an editorial stand on issues , hell, you can't find an independent and individual newspaper or TV station of consequence. They are part of chains that are owned by bigger corporations who have no desire to have conflicting reports or editorials out there going against their interests.

I'd say journalism restricted by business interests and the concept of 'in the national interest' amounts to less than freedom of expression. There will be intentions and actions in Iraq and Afghanistan that will never see the light of journalism day due to the aforementioned priniciples.

From a reader's point of view - I'd quite like an independent report of events - that is my idea of a free press.
