It's an expression of assessment, not of being. With "slut", there is a more tangible suggestion of the sexual looseness or sexual history of someone (which is an objective thing, not subjective)...although, we still kind of fall back to subjectivity. To person A, someone's who's slept with 50 people may be a "slut" and to person B, it would only take 6 to qualify someone for that title.
