The idea behind a terrorists strike is to instill fear... there are far more sites to pick then politically popular sites to instill that fear.

Take out communication hubs (dallas).... transportation centers (amtrak) .... vacation spots.( got your ears on?)

The 9/11 attacks were bad... they could have been far worse. 4000 in NY versus how many at a televised football game? vs how many visiting a theme park on a busy summer day?

Why is something wrong with this picture?

The essence of terrorism is to do as much damage to the opposing 'cause' as possible for the least expenditure.

They believe in mathematics and gamble on probability. Hence one person wearing explosives blowing up 100 others in a Baghdad market place. Some perpetrators believe they will achieve martyrdom but still more others are being pragmatic. They want the greatest destruction to life, property, AND reputation/esteem.

The perpetrators of 9/11 wouldn't swap the effect they achieved for a greater loss of life elsewhere that had less symbolic value.

They hit as many symbols as they could - financial district, transport infrastructure, defense installation and capabilities, plus the sheer massive damage, to ego, reputation and psyche. The misguided mess that followed was probably hoped for and remains a bonus.

They disbelieve in our culture, or their perception of it. They would probably carry out something in Hollywood if not for the fact that many would be silently cheering.

But a theme park is loaded with CHILDREN. Even the most innocent are not safe.

True Ebony, but been there, done that already. I suggest that is a past battle.

Master just reminded me of something i read long ago but had forgotten. Now i cant find the article. I do recall it was someone in the financial district who realized alot of money from Bin Laden was tied up in stocks of the companies located within the towers themselves.

Am i the only one, besides Master, who remembers this?

Logic would dictate that they will try new targets. I was just tossing this out for a few ideas. Ah,.....do you have any?

Why yes!
In 1987, terrorists attacked Rome Airport. About half a dozen men walked into the ariport wielding automatic rifles, and sprayed bullets indiscriminantly around, killing a few people.
They created a wave of fear and terror across Europe, and when I visited later that year, every airport and train station was heavily guarded by armed soldiers.
By any standards, it was a pretty successful attack- it did exactly what it meant to do, cause fear and apprehension and confusion on an entire continent.
Using nothing more sophisticated than rifles.

So a good argument could be made that in this new war on terror, the old concerns about Constitutional rights is "quaint" and that the Constitution is "not a suicide pact." Perhaps the Dept of Homeland Security and the FBI should register all firearms in America to prevent such an attack here, limiting 2nd Amendment rights to the highly regulated, highly restricted posession of single shot rifles and revolvers. Maybe even confiscate weapons from those who did not fit very selective criteria. All to keep us safe, of course.

Oh, I know, hard core liberals will wail about the "Constitution" and alledged "rights' but these are the same people who complained about the Patriot Act and warrentless wiretapping.

Or....

We could not overreact every time something happens. It would make terrorism pointless.

Every time I see this thread title, a song plays in my head....

If I were a terrorist,
And you were a lady,
Would you marry me anyway,
Would you blow me baby...
