Little pig, little pig, let me in...

quote:

C-SPAN: Televise health care negotiations

(USA Today)

C-SPAN CEO Brian Lamb today asked congressional leaders of both parties to "open all important negotiations, including any conference committee meetings, to electronic media coverage."

During the campaign, then-Sen. Barack Obama criticized Hillary Rodham Clinton and the Clinton administration for negotiating a health care plan behind closed doors and said that was a factor in the plan's failure to pass. In one campaign appearance in Virginia, Obama said, "We’ll have the negotiations televised on C-SPAN, so that people can see who is making arguments on behalf of their constituents, and who are making arguments on behalf of the drug companies or the insurance companies."

PolitiFact, a St. Petersburg Times' website that tracks Obama's campaign promises, rates this as a "promise broken."

<snip>

Updated at 5:21 p.m. ET. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi won't say if she wants to open the health care negotiations to C-SPAN, but she did defend the process to date as open and transparent.

At an afternoon press conference today, Pelosi said "there has never been a more open process for any legislation in anyone who serves here's experience." For example, she pointed out that "tens of thousands of people participated in our town meetings" and that there were "over a hundred witnesses in our bipartisan hearings."

<snip>

Updated at 5:49 p.m. ET. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid also weighed in on the C-SPAN challenge. Reid spokesman Jim Manley said the senator "appreciates C-SPAN's commitment to ensuring transparency." Then he went on to pretty much say: thanks, but no thanks, blamed the Republicans for obstructing the process, and promised to "continue to ensure that the Congress and the public will have ample opportunity to see and evaluate health insurance reform legislation before it moves to final passage.

Wasn't there a campaign promise about this?

Yes, and its mentioned in the USA Today article I posted, second paragraph down:

So it is, but I wanted to get it out there for the people who just respond to conservative poster's pics/avatars, without actually reading.

Its not just us "right wing extremists" who are seeing these things though Rich...

quote:

Nancy Pelosi takes swipe at President Obama's campaign promises

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, piqued with White House pressure to accept the Senate health reform bill, threw a rare rhetorical elbow at President Barack Obama Tuesday, questioning his commitment to his 2008 campaign promises. A leadership aide said it was no accident.

Pelosi emerged from a meeting with her leadership team and committee chairs in the Capitol to face an aggressive throng of reporters who immediately hit her with C-SPAN’s request that she permit closed-door final talks on the bill to be televised. A reporter reminded the San Francisco Democrat that in 2008, then-candidate Obama opined that all such negotiations be open to C-SPAN cameras.

“There are a number of things he was for on the campaign trail,” quipped Pelosi, who has no intention of making the deliberations public.

People familiar with Pelosi's thinking wasted little time in explaining precisely what she meant by a “number of things” – saying it reflected weeks of simmering tension on health care between two Democratic power players who have functioned largely in lock-step during Obama’s first year in office.

As much as I want this to happen, it is not going to. It is not like he is the very first person elected to break an election promise, why If one wanted to one could show how every elected official has not kept there election promises regardless of party

Of course there was the Bush/Cheney Promise of 2000 that the GOP break everyday

"There are 43 million uninsured Americans – 4 million more than when the current administration took office. George W. Bush will reverse this trend by making health insurance affordable for hard-working, low-income families." [Source: Bush-Cheney 2000 website]

Fact :In the first two years Bush was in office, the number of uninsured American increased by nearly four million. Since Bush took office, health insurance premiums have risen by an average rate of 12.5 percent per year. According to a major study, "widespread adoption [of Bush's major health care plan] could drive up the annual deductible paid by workers."  [Source: U.S. Census Bureau, 7/8/04; Kaiser Family Foundation, 4/04; USA Today, 4/25/04]

"George W. Bush will establish the 'Healthy Communities Innovation Fund' to provide $500 million in grants over five years to fund innovative projects addressing targeted health risks, such as childhood diabetes." [Source: Bush-Cheney 2000 website]

Fact:

"To restore confidence in government, [George W. Bush] will...attack pork-barrel spending." [Source: Bush-Cheney 2000 website]

Fact:
Since assuming office, President Bush has failed to veto a single bill, despite the enormous amount of pork that has crossed his desk.  Even conservatives are getting frustrated.  The Heritage Foundation recently wrote, "Budget discipline clearly isn't a priority of this administration, so why pretend it will get tough on frivolous measures like these?" hehe...funny you say that.  Even Michael Steele agrees....

"Promoting the book on Fox News on Monday, Steele told Sean Hannity that Republicans couldn't retake the House of Representatives in 2010 and added that he wasn't even sure they were ready to lead.

Asked if GOPers will take back the House, Steele said, "Not this year."
"I don't know all the candidates yet," Steele continued. "We still have some vacancies that need to get filled, but then the question we need to ask ourselves is: If we do that, are we ready?"

Read it for yourself...  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/01/05/michael-steele-book-repub_n_411439.html

You act as though no GOP running for office has ever not followed through on a campaign promise,  There are several in this thread that GWB made when he ran for president, he not did follow through on any of those,so when the GOP does not keep their promise's you seem OK with that.

You either dislike the fact that all politicians say whatever they have to to get elected and call them all on it, or your just another GOP/DEM supporter drinking the Kool-Aid

rather fox news like to say its only wrong when the other side does it, and then forget how often your side has done the same thing

Hell look at all the GOP senators who voted NO for the stim package, but then go home and take credit for the money coming into their district from it, I have yet to see you complain about that, just more evidence it is only wrong when the DEMS do it

C-Span should have addressed that letter to President Obama, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. He's the one who made the promise.

Didn't Pelosi hold "closed door meetings" to discuss wether or not illegal aliens should get free healthcare in this country or was that Harry Reid?
Maybe she needs one of those signs on her desk like Truman had; "The Transparancy Stops Here!"

Shhhhhhhhhhh!

We don't talk about Bush anymore.

We're in the Obama era.

Bush is old news.

But feel free to bring up Clinton and Carter any time you like.

PaHunk, I don't think anyone would actually be "surprised" by that.
My friend in Nevada tells me Harry Reid is in big trouble and not well liked anymore by the populace. "He's gone!"
Pelosi one can only hope!
