In one campaign appearance in Virginia, Obama said, "We’ll have the negotiations televised on C-SPAN, so that people can see who is making arguments on behalf of their constituents, and who are making arguments on behalf of the drug companies or the insurance companies."


PolitiFact, a St. Petersburg Times' website that tracks Obama's campaign promises, rates this as a "promise broken."

Updated at 5:21 p.m. ET. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi won't say if she wants to open the health care negotiations to C-SPAN, but she did defend the process to date as open and transparent.


At an afternoon press conference today, Pelosi said "there has never been a more open process for any legislation in anyone who serves here's experience." For example, she pointed out that "tens of thousands of people participated in our town meetings" and that there were "over a hundred witnesses in our bipartisan hearings."

Updated at 5:49 p.m. ET. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid also weighed in on the C-SPAN challenge. Reid spokesman Jim Manley said the senator "appreciates C-SPAN's commitment to ensuring transparency." Then he went on to pretty much say: thanks, but no thanks, blamed the Republicans for obstructing the process, and promised to "continue to ensure that the Congress and the public will have ample opportunity to see and evaluate health insurance reform legislation before it moves to final passage.

Nancy Pelosi takes swipe at President Obama's campaign promises


House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, piqued with White House pressure to accept the Senate health reform bill, threw a rare rhetorical elbow at President Barack Obama Tuesday, questioning his commitment to his 2008 campaign promises. A leadership aide said it was no accident.


Pelosi emerged from a meeting with her leadership team and committee chairs in the Capitol to face an aggressive throng of reporters who immediately hit her with C-SPAN’s request that she permit closed-door final talks on the bill to be televised. A reporter reminded the San Francisco Democrat that in 2008, then-candidate Obama opined that all such negotiations be open to C-SPAN cameras.


“There are a number of things he was for on the campaign trail,” quipped Pelosi, who has no intention of making the deliberations public.


People familiar with Pelosi's thinking wasted little time in explaining precisely what she meant by a “number of things” – saying it reflected weeks of simmering tension on health care between two Democratic power players who have functioned largely in lock-step during Obama’s first year in office.

As much as I want this to happen, it is not going to. It is not like he is the very first person elected to break an election promise, why If one wanted to one could show how every elected official has not kept there election promises regardless of party
