I know the drill Ellen. When it's hot it's because of global warming. When it's very cold it's because of global warming..

Reynaud's Syndrome Lauri? Sounds like it to me. Very underrated and quite dangerous as it leaves you prone to frostbite. Its something I've always had - my fingers turn white as the blood vessels constrict overmuch and I lose all feeling in them; sometimes all of them and sometimes just one or two. Just another reason to hate the snow and ice - I cant play in it.

Years ago I saved one of our drivers from getting fired through all this. We ran Russia, year round, and this guy would go during summer but refused when winter approached, explaining his problem. The transport manager (you know the type I'm sure) thought he was just trying to get out of what is an awful journey and wanted to fire him on the spot.

Its the worst and longest period of wintry weather for 30 years here in the UK. Our usual leaden sky, accompanied by mild drizzle from time to time has been replaced for weeks by freezing temperatures, snow and ice direct from Siberia. The snow is frozen, with more snow on top. Any thats melted has been transformed into shimmering stretches of ice. There is at least another week to go - with a heavy snowfall set for Sunday - before any change.

Roads are suffering as grit runs out, having had little apparent effect so far. Its dodgy enough on the main roads, and anywhere else its nothing short of treacherous, even though the main danger is clueless British drivers. The breakdown and emergency services are at full stretch, and even the motorways are festooned with abandoned vehicles.

Power stations are running at full capacity as heating systems are turned to max. The airports and railway stations are closed or services cancelled. Schools are taking what is turning into an extra week of Christmas break and thousands of workers, unable or unwilling to travel, are doing likewise.

I can work at home. Therefore my gripe with this weather is primarily personal. For one, my toes have now been frozen for days. For two, its impossible to sleep with frozen toes. For three, my car battery - the same sort as used on trucks - froze to death, and for four, when fixed the car was no fun to use anyway on account of the idiots on the roads; the only fun was in the Tesco car park (the new frozen section) where vast empty stretches of unused spaces allowed a bit of play.

Roll on summer with its leaden skys and warm drizzle.

E

I'd say now is a great time to visit...but it's FUCKING COLD here.... but at least it isn't snowing....

Oh... but it soon will be... it... will... be...

And when that three snowflake accumulation does happen, I will be outside... nekkid, just as if I were still in upstate NY... dancing amongst those tiny glittering crystals.

Oh boo hoo. Welcome to my world. Another storms a blowing in chicago. Another 4 to8 inches. The difference is the salt trucks are ready. And we know how to drive in it and get our car out when stuck.

NormalOutside -> RE: fed up with the snow (1/6/2010 11:31:25 PM)

Been warm and mild here in the Vancouver area of Canada. We haven't had a snowflake yet this year, and winter's 2/3 over. If we make it a few more weeks, it will have been a snowless winter. :)

LadyEllen -> RE: fed up with the snow (1/6/2010 11:33:39 PM)

Yeah LL, but the point is that this is your world. It is not a world anyone under 30 in the UK has ever experienced and not one that I enjoyed in my childhood and dont enjoy now. Youre right that we're clueless though.

I dunno, but to me it seems like in the UK things are becoming more and more like Poland during the former communist period.

It's not just the long queues in the post offices, banks, supermarkets etc and no, it's not just the weather either (well, public transport doesn't descend into chaos when they see snow, they just turn the heating on full whack on everything and anything and people go out and shovel snow off roads and pavements) but it's other things too.

Like whatever happened to the fruit juice drink Five Alive? Here in London you can't buy it for love or money, it's gone, disappeared. In some places you can still buy Um Bongo - and incidentally I know someone from the Congo who's never heard of it. But try and buy Five Alive, and you cannot.

No, it's the Stalin-esque images of Conservative leader David Cameron on posters for the General Election advertising 'time for change'. Not sure if this is what the Tories really wanted, but Cameron's image on these posters is a fine example of Soviet poster art (he's even got that stuffed animal look of the former Soviet politicians) all air-brushed and sleek and bright eyes and smarm.

Then there's my own experience from last night when I was diagnosed with having pneumonia in my right lung at the A and E Department of a London hospital, given some antibiotics and left to walk home through the snow, ice and subzero temperatures of London. Now this came about after being taken to hospital by ambulance early in the evening, and as I walked the twenty yards from the ambulance to the A and E it was deemed I was non-urgent and left to wait several hours in a queue to see a doctor. The doctor looked at my notes which said 'breathing difficulties', 'chest infection', 'completed course of antibiotics' and announced I might have a problem with my lungs, and that I needed to be seen as an emergency and that it needed to be checked out by another doctor.

This took me back to 1994 when in Poland I tried to explain to a doctor in broken Polish that I had tripped over tram lines in the centre of a roundabout and twisted my ankle. This resulted in me being rushed at very high speed to hospital in an ambulance with blue lights and sirens blaring for my jeans to be cut and my leg fitted with a crotch to toe plaster cast and where I was given a pair of red plastic crutches. Whilst waiting I discovered that the doctor has misunderstood me and thought I had been caught up in a collision between two trams on a roundabout. I was then taken home, but the ambulance men returned the next day to take my crutches back as a man had broken his leg and they left me with a 'pirate' type of wooden crutch.

I would write more, but I'm off in search of fresh supplies of lemon juice and vodka for my tea. Oh and some pickled cabbage.

As a truck driver, this evening I have come to the conclusion that MO never gets snow. They can't (yes, I know they do), because as soon as the 1st flurry starts, cars start slamming on the brakes and do 30mph in the middle lane. I damn near creamed 2 of them in St. Louis. Mind you it was only a light powdery snow, not the heavy wet stuff. Then came up on an accident, that traffic was backed up for 10 miles. Why? Well everyone has to look at the van crashed into the Jersey Barrier Wall. Get past that & I figure, great, now we'll move! WRONG!!!! 35 mph is all anyone would go. I finally stopped for about 15 minutes so I could get in with a different crowd & it wasn't any better. I finally made it to a rest area just outside of Boonville & parked it.  My real worry is that tomorrow in Kansas City it's supposed to be -30 with the wind chill. 20 years ago I had frostbite on my toes & 2 years ago my finger, even with thick gloves, thermal socks & heavy boots I still lose feeling. I'm open to suggestions, because I WILL have to be in & out of the truck tomorrow. And if I can't find my gloves (they're in this disaster of a truck somewhere) I am NOT beyond wearing thermal socks to cover my hands, but it will take me up to 2 days to get feeling back if I have to stay in the area.
Please everyone take the extra precautions to keep safe AND warm. And keep an emergency kit in your car. I learned that years ago for my truck, and if anyone wants any advice or suggestions for an emergency kit, please do NOT hesitate to ask, I would be more than happy to help. Also if anyone ever has any questions about the trucks please feel free to email me
Lauri

One of the reasons I don't miss driving trucks (but I sure do miss the 379 I used to drive... 550 Cat, 18 spd trans... *purrrrrrrrr*)

Jeffff -> RE: fed up with the snow (1/7/2010 8:40:50 AM)

It is snowing like a motherfucker here. Thats a technical weather term for a lot of snow.

Does it snow in Nigeria?....what about Ghana?

Those bitches are looking more and more attractive. I hope they are really sincere in their desires.

Shiroka -> RE: fed up with the snow (1/7/2010 10:55:00 PM)

I despise the snow. Last winter I was in Washington where if it was not for my fiance I would have most liely passed away last winter with no heat and being snowed in by at least 6ft of snow with no heat or propane at all and no way to get out on my own.

I feel and understand the pains of mass snows when they happen.................................of course that's also why we are in texas now.not seeing much snow here.

LadiTrukDriver -> RE: fed up with the snow (1/7/2010 11:24:37 PM)

You know, the funny thing is, in 6 months we're all going to be complaining that it's too damned hot LMAO

LadyEllen -> RE: fed up with the snow (1/7/2010 11:38:32 PM)

Absolutely Lauri; thats what makes me laugh about my compatriots every summer. We will quite often have a week or two when it gets "hot" (30c or so) and theyre all moaning and groaning about it - whilst looking forward to their two weeks in the Med, where it will be at least 30c from about 6am till midnight.

GreedyTop -> RE: fed up with the snow (1/7/2010 11:43:34 PM)

I imagine, LE, that when I get there, I'll still be moaning it's too cold, even at that temp.  LOL

It's actually warmer tonight than it has been... ok, so it's 41F...  but fuckin' hell!  My hands are cold,,,,,

LadyEllen -> RE: fed up with the snow (1/8/2010 12:12:41 AM)

We're just watching on the news GT - iguanas falling from trees in Florida because the temperature is so low theyre going into a form of hybernation.

-11 here last night (Birmingham); in the Scottish Highlands it was -21
