Its the worst and longest period of wintry weather for 30 years here in the UK. Our usual leaden sky, accompanied by mild drizzle from time to time has been replaced for weeks by freezing temperatures, snow and ice direct from Siberia. The snow is frozen, with more snow on top. Any thats melted has been transformed into shimmering stretches of ice. There is at least another week to go - with a heavy snowfall set for Sunday - before any change.

Roads are suffering as grit runs out, having had little apparent effect so far. Its dodgy enough on the main roads, and anywhere else its nothing short of treacherous, even though the main danger is clueless British drivers. The breakdown and emergency services are at full stretch, and even the motorways are festooned with abandoned vehicles.

Power stations are running at full capacity as heating systems are turned to max. The airports and railway stations are closed or services cancelled. Schools are taking what is turning into an extra week of Christmas break and thousands of workers, unable or unwilling to travel, are doing likewise.

I can work at home. Therefore my gripe with this weather is primarily personal. For one, my toes have now been frozen for days. For two, its impossible to sleep with frozen toes. For three, my car battery - the same sort as used on trucks - froze to death, and for four, when fixed the car was no fun to use anyway on account of the idiots on the roads; the only fun was in the Tesco car park (the new frozen section) where vast empty stretches of unused spaces allowed a bit of play.

Roll on summer with its leaden skys and warm drizzle.

E

Fill a half litre bottle with hot water from the tap (not boiling / burning hot). Put it in a sock. Put that near your feet.

Meanwhile the kitties like the hot water bottle thing very much I find.

How could you enjoy those warm spring breezes with the fragrance of wildflowers...if you didn't have the dismal days of winter to compare with?

warm spring breezes? fragrances of wildflowers?

This is England Butch. We have two seasons normally - cold rain and warm rain. And the only fragrances here are exhaust fumes, the curry house/chip shop and the smell of desperation.

Yes, but you appreciate the April showers much more after the winter freeze and the March downpours.

LadyEllen, I can only echo your sentiments.......the ground has been white here for weeks and we are just beginning a new storm that could give us as much as 12 inches. It has been frigid cold, too cold to even be out playing in the snow. The kind of cold that freezes exposed skin and makes your nose burn to breath. And after this snow, it is supposed to get even colder. And the wind is to pick up....oh yeah. Too fucking cold AND a blizzard with deep 4wheel drive swallowing snow drifts.

Whatever brain dead moron came up with the concept of global warming was doing too many brain cell killing drugs.

I love the snow, last was the first night of proper phone in work and stay indoors snow that we got round my way, and really the only other time I am aware of was just before christmas, reading and basingstoke was stupidly hit by it.

The grit running out isn't a problem here either, the problem instead is that grit has little to no affect once it snows on top of it, the fact that it has fallen heavily overnight means that there is nothing clearing it up.

Winter is meant to be cold, an excuse for hot water bottles and woolly jumpers, sitting in and chatting with the people you live with.

The only thing that concerns me about it is the notion of older people buying out charity shop books because they cant afford coal, that to me is appealing. (of course alone with the emergency services struggling, I really wish people would listen to the dont drive unless you have to/dont ring 999 unless its an emergency)

I don't look forward to summer, to the unexercising masses stripping down to their pants at the mere hint of sunshine

Greetings frozen forum readers,

Have you tried baking some potatoes in the oven (wrapped in foil) and then keeping them in your coat or sweater pockets?  (old country trick)

And another random thought, motorcycle riders have suits, socks and gloves that are warmed, either by electrical or battery energy.

FL they say has a bad freeze. So I went shopping for oranges.

Where I live in FL, about 185 ft above sea level, it's been below freezing (that would be 32 F or 0 C) for the past four nights and is forecasted to be below freezing for at least another seven. We even have a 30% chance of snow for Friday night/Saturday morning.

So, if you visited Walt Disney World or Universal Studios during this past holiday season and were deeply disappointed with all their fake snow falling about, come on down and see the real stuff! How much more magical can it get to see Space Ship Earth covered up as the world's largest snowball?

Winter depression. Put on as much light as you can. Preferably add ten or twenty TL tubes.

Thanks Rule, I've heard the lights thing, my girlfriend has a special light for it. Does it work with any lights?

I dunno. But I google that you need ten thousand lux, which is forty times what is typical for a normal lighted room. I recommend that you google winter depression yourself.

I would use white light. So put up twenty or forty TL tubes.

Seasonal Affective Disorder.

I think it's meant to be worse in mainland UK but here in Ireland it's about -2 C with 3 inches of snow. If I didn't have to deal with all the traffic accidents it would be quite nice. Said on the news in other parts of Europe were like -40 C and hundreds of people were dying, UK is as ever mild and still making the most fuss about it.

But then again, snowmen make me happy.
