LadyEllen -> fed up with the snow (1/6/2010 12:55:56 PM)

Its the worst and longest period of wintry weather for 30 years here in the UK. Our usual leaden sky, accompanied by mild drizzle from time to time has been replaced for weeks by freezing temperatures, snow and ice direct from Siberia. The snow is frozen, with more snow on top. Any thats melted has been transformed into shimmering stretches of ice. There is at least another week to go - with a heavy snowfall set for Sunday - before any change. Roads are suffering as grit runs out, having had little apparent effect so far. Its dodgy enough on the main roads, and anywhere else its nothing short of treacherous, even though the main danger is clueless British drivers. The breakdown and emergency services are at full stretch, and even the motorways are festooned with abandoned vehicles. Power stations are running at full capacity as heating systems are turned to max. The airports and railway stations are closed or services cancelled. Schools are taking what is turning into an extra week of Christmas break and thousands of workers, unable or unwilling to travel, are doing likewise. I can work at home. Therefore my gripe with this weather is primarily personal. For one, my toes have now been frozen for days. For two, its impossible to sleep with frozen toes. For three, my car battery - the same sort as used on trucks - froze to death, and for four, when fixed the car was no fun to use anyway on account of the idiots on the roads; the only fun was in the Tesco car park (the new frozen section) where vast empty stretches of unused spaces allowed a bit of play. Roll on summer with its leaden skys and warm drizzle. E
