At one time, and for a number of years, I was a commercial fisherman. Everything from long-lining swordfish to lobster and crab. I also killed a lot of fish fishing for pleasure. There is a big difference between the two. Over the years, and post commercial fishing, I found that I felt badly about taking any fish that were not for my table alone. No more stocking the freezer or sharing with friends and neighbors. This change was partly due to witnessing, year after year, declining numbers of various species as well as a growing awareness of my own greed and over-fishing. These days, I enjoy just being out on the water and , occasionaly, taking a fish for my table. Fish or no fish, the experience of being out there is just as satisfying. Hey, recently, sneaking around the back country in a kayak, I happened upon a Redisg Egret trying to kill and eat a rattle snake. It was cool...the Egret won.
