So all you ice-fishing dudes/dudettes....do you subscribe to the "chair and a tarp" school, or the "totally tricked out mini-cabin" school?

Enquiring minds want to know.

If you catch nothing with more equipment than the US Army you look like a twat.

Go fishing with a stick and line I say.

The stick's kinda artsy-fartsy, though, innit?  TWUE fisherfolks would just use a damn handline.  Woven from their own hair of course, with pubic hair for a lure, and a hook made out of a straight pin.

Fish, fuck, or fight.

(Truly, I don't get it....so...you fish....you spend all day long trying to hook a fish....you get one....you wasted 10 fucking hours X whatever the fuck you make per hour....gas, car, all the shit....and it still tastes like fucking fish. Seems like a no brainer to me....fish fuck or fight).

Kinda simple if you ask me?

A really good day fishing will have elements of all three, especially if booze is in the vicinity.

I definitely  had the best of both worlds growing up. I lived in Northern Wyoming until I was 20 and I could drive an hour to some of the greatest trout fishing in the world (All of the big Montana Rivers and the good ones in Wyoming) The best part about the winter is that the Bighorn River is a tailwater to a dam so it never froze over. The average water temp was 38 degrees year round which made the fishing great. I seemed to do alot better in school when I moved away from there for some reason.

As far as ice fishing goes, you have to go all out. My family had a hut that you could pull out on a 4 wheeler and it had a generator, 32 inch tv and a nice electric heater....it wasn't too rough to fish out of at all.

Me too.............but I do not DO ice fishing.

When there is ice on the ponds, I go to the seafood section at the grocery store, in addition to the liquor section......then I sit on my sofa and lament the fuckin winter.

Ice fishing is not your kink? I want vid of you DOING ice fishing!

Here is my stick, heading to the water,

"Uh sooo fishes, come here often?"

Is this a line you would say?

When I was first learning to fly fish, a wise old guide tolde there are four stages in a fly fisherman's life.
Stage one: you want to catch the most fish.
Stage two: you want to catch the biggest fish.
Stage three: you want to catch the smartest fish.
Stage four: you just want to understand the soul of the river.

Spring soon come.

Beautiful. And as far as I'm concerned, fly fishing is the only fishing worth doing, but nostalgia forms my bias. I spent a lot of time as a kid with my dad, learning how from him. Poor guy still hasn't caught his mythical Steelhead. While I liked being out in a pretty river, having quiet time with my dad, I do NOT miss getting up that early or occasionally having to kill fish. Yeah, I'm a pansy.

Give me a cane pole and a bucket of worms and I'll fish until the cows come home.      (Not exactly the glamorous fishing yall are talking about ... ice fishing, trout fishing, fly fishing).

What about a bobber?  Do you prefer the round ones, or the elliptical ones with the pointy ends?

I prefer head bobbers, in my lap.

I did forget about the bobbers.   The round ones ... never knew there was any other kind until I was grown.

Cjan would require 2 bobbers, one for his lap and one for his line.

Fish & Game may take offense at the public blow job, though.

First off, we don't use bobbers.  At best we use "strike indicators" at worst we utilize "floats."

I still like the fight and I do enjoy a few meals of lake perch throughout the year.Almost everything other than the perchies is immediately returned to their watery lair.

Since I do live in the city sometimes it is not always the most quiet and soul enriching place to get out.  Still, there are times when salmon and perch fishing that it can be quite serene looking out at a rainbow while behind you the concrete mountains rise towards the sky.

There are plenty of road trips where the fishing trip is not measured by the catch but rather by the quiet comfort and the company.

It gives me peace. Throughout my life people and pursuits have come and gone....Fishing has stood the test of time and offered a much needed sanctuary.

"baseball, Ray...."

If it is above freezing (or close) on any given sunday, I can be found on a stream in the mountains here.  I was once castigated by a churchgoing friend for not doing what he did on sunday.

I replied "I feel a lot closer to the maker out in the river, the sun coming up, burning the fog off the riffle, feeling the current tug at my legs,  a duck flying over on his migratory quest, the splash of a beaver or otter behind me, that first rise as a trout takes an unlucky bug off the surface.  The rhythm of the long rod is almost hypnotic.  Yes, I feel closer to the maker there than I do sitting in a stuffy room with a bunch of people that were, mere hours ago, drunk off their ass.  Sitting there listening to a man that I happen to know is fucking the organist tell me that I'm a bad person."

They didnt have a comeback for that.

At one time, and for a number of years, I was a commercial fisherman. Everything from long-lining swordfish to lobster and crab. I also killed a lot of fish fishing for pleasure. There is a big difference between the two.

Over the years, and post commercial fishing, I found that I felt badly about taking any fish that were not for my table alone. No more stocking the freezer or sharing with friends and neighbors. This change was partly due to witnessing, year after year, declining numbers of various species as well as a growing awareness of my own greed and over-fishing.

These days, I enjoy just being out on the water and , occasionaly, taking a fish for my table. Fish or no fish, the experience of being out there is just as satisfying.

Hey, recently, sneaking around the back country in a kayak, I happened upon a Redisg Egret trying to kill and eat a rattle snake. It was cool...the Egret won.

Stop that...my whole tux fetish is all because of Sean Connery. And accents.

Arrg.

Back on topic...I enjoy the tranquility of fishing more so than the act of fishing. Someone else better be baiting my hook though.
