A couple of years ago I met an old man with a tattoo who as a young lad had played with her in the ghetto shortly before she and her family disappeared into hiding. He didnt think anything of her at the time - the penny dropped only later when the diary was published. He was "lucky" - his brother had been born in the UK so he and his family were "Tausch Juden" (Jews to be exchanged for cash as foreign citizens), comparatively well treated and never destined for death though it came close a few times. By the end of the war he and his brother (separated from their parents) had been trucked into Germany, heavily guarded. One morning, starved half to death, they looked out and the guards had gone. They were just left there, with some others, with no idea where they were or what was to be done. Crazy stuff all in all. It can happen here. E

I think the world has lost another brave soul who dared to stand for what was right and do the right thing, whatever the cost. She had amazing spirit as many did, but she helped to bring about a situation that touched many live's through her actions and the telling of the events that took place. Lady Ellen, there was a book called Pure Blood that I read when I was about twenty one. It was about the perfect society that hitler was trying to create using ss men and women who were starving basically and willing to do anything to survive. They were all inspected and then it was determined how many babies the woman was worth. She was housed and fed until she produced that many babies. After things fell apart, the babies were all just left... rows and rows of babies laying on a floor or in cribs, totally alone. One rarely hears about that aspect of what hitler did and I wish I still had that book!

The Miep Gies’ and Oscar Schindler’s (and so many others – whom history has not noted) of the world, who chose to do the right thing over the convenient thing are what give me a small glimmer of hope for humanity. May she rest in peace.

Yes, Marc, that's very true. I read the diary when I was very young, but I remember the characters very well, and Miep was described by Anne as a wonderfully kind and humane woman. I think that for people like her, it wasn't just about 'doing the right thing'. It was about doing the only thing possible thing to them, and that's what makes them such rare and precious nuggets of humanity.

I can believe it Lockit - the whole episode is just so bizarrely crazy, only made more so because these werent idiots doing these things for the most part but highly educated and cultured people. Little known fact - Anne-Frid from Abba (the one with the dark hair) is one of the Lebensborn children (Lebensborn being the nazi programme to produce "perfect Aryan" children). Her father was a German SS officer and her mother a Norwegian. In 1945 he was rounded up and she fled to Sweden to escape retribution for collaboration. E
