When I started this thread I was hoping to see that people would say they laugh at things that  just "aren't right"/

I got almost none of that back. That leads me to believe that I am either fucked in the head (always a possibility)
or that folks here are somewhat less than honest with themselves, and perhaps others.

Or maybe it's partly because very few people took the thread seriously enough to bother formulating a serious response, because they knew it was inevitably just going to become yet another clown show. That's what you guys want, right?

Come on all you offended. What if he had said "nigger" here? Wouldn't you be angry and sickened? Well, why aren't you by this? Hmmm, come on. Where is all the screaming protests and angry finger-pointing? Hmm, as I thought. There won't be any. Never is

Actually several of us answered very seriously. I did at least twice.

Fast reply-
I haven't read the entire thread, but I have heard it said, and i agree, that we laugh at things that make us uncomfortable.
Things like death, sex, bodily functions, etc.

As kittin said at the first page, we use it co cope.

So yeah, expect some good Haiti jokes coming our way.

Working in an ER that's very true. Sometimes dealing with the most horrible things people can do to one another you make a choice...

Laugh or cry.

I also answered seriously. It was only later that it ended up being silly. But does that make the serious replies invalid if we end up joking around?

I don't know about you, but my life is pretty stressful right now so I like to laugh as much as possible. I also like debate and I post seriously all the time.

We just don't have the right sense of humor, apparently.

Then why on earth are you reading this thread?

I skipped most of it, because I don't like reading the n-word under any circumstances, and it's not as though they were discussing something that could make me $50,000, you know?

Seriously, wtf????  I don't see any regular poster making a clownshow out of redwoodgirl's sincere request for relationship advice, or any other thread where there's real emotion on the line.  If you walk into Off Topic Discussion -- and a thread that from jump is about pushing the far limits of humor -- do you think it's all going to be "gosh, tee hee?"

Just hide all these lame-ass fucks and enjoy your political discourse.  Problem solved.

Really? I see it on a fairly regular basis. The point is, you never know which ones it'll be. Some people think that makes the forums more interesting; some of us think it makes them less so. If I'm in the latter group, I think I've got as much right to bitch about it as the people who think it makes them more interesting have to bitch back at me for complaining about it. There's a "hide poster" feature for anyone who doesn't want to hear what I have to say. It'll neither make or break my day either way.

Hee hee!  Fair enough!  I hope you're having a great evening!

Or maybe you didn't read any of it. You don't like me, thats cool, but many people responded seriously. They just didn't respond as I expected.
Don't act all holy here dude. I have seen you make your own off topic comments. Don't act like you don't.

Here is the dealio.  When you iz white and you see white folk acting all hillbilly and shit, what you see is a part of yourself. You get embarassed by their actions... I believe the term in German is called "Schadenfreude."  Where you are embarrassed by the actions of another.  I was dating a woman that called it "frempsing."  So me and mine have adopted that term.

Actually Schadenfreude (and I love the word) means the delight that one takes in the misfortune of others.

The word Domi was looking for is fremdschämen.

I believe that it is entirely dependent upon the situation what is too far.
I know that I have made some inappropriate jokes, and did laugh about a good deal more. As many have already pointed out, it is a kind of coping mechanism. If you don't laugh you cry.

In the context of the thread you are referring to, I feel it was too far. And that is completely my problem to deal with. As it is the problems of the joksters to deal with the responses they got. That is the danger of risking such jokes.
What in my opinion really got the majority of the posters on that thread to rally and cry out though, was the feeling of deliberate riling that formed when, instead of stopping after the first jokes got unfavourable responses, the jokes kept coming. It felt like a testing of boundaries, a attempt to push the envelope still a bit more, see how angry people would get. Maybe a bit of wallowing in the "bad girl/boy" imagery.
At least I felt, that a thread honoring a person like Miep Gies was the wrong thread for behaviour like this.
