Holy shit!
I just read in Yahoo that Obama was at Northeastern U. Sunday with Martha Coakley and a "crowd" of,.....1,500."
Fifteen hundred? That's all? You'd expect a "crowd" of 25-50,000 normally when the president comes to town!
And they're starting to use words like "floundering" when talking about Martha's campaign.

You know, I worked in emergency medicine for a bit myself, -and- worked as a midwife for a decade and a half. I always considered my -clients-/patient needs first, but we -did- have some staff members who were uncomfortable participating in one or more areas of care -- and you know what, most of those peoples' beliefs were known by the other staff members, and most of us did our very level best to pick up the area where our colleague was unwilling to compromise hir beliefs... and if there was a TRUE emergency where those people's hands were needed... they somehow managed to weigh the outcomes and do what they needed to do (or, in all honesty, decided that the work didn't suit their spiritual temperament, and found positions that used their skills and didn't provide such a conflict with their moral foundations). I simply don't understand why this was such a controversial statement.

Tazzy and I agree on this one; if someone can do the job, cool. If someone cannot do the job then they shouldn't be doing the job.

Does Ms. Coakley also feel that an atheist working in the ER has no business treating a priest?

Leave atheists out of this one, the people generally thought of as atheists don't have superstitious beliefs that prevent them from rendering aid. I get that you were looking for a bad analogy to make your point, but that one really didn't fit. Hmm.....are there any Amish electricians?

I get that Catholics in the first world aren't generally buying a hundred percent of what the church is selling, I've known people who admittedly didn't believe in god who got upset when I questioned their catholic-ness. Hell, the priest in your scenario could even be an atheist. However:

1. It seems like the phrase “Devout Catholic” was added by the journalist, Coakleys comment was about people who didn’t want to hand out any form of birth control. So perhaps your comment should have been directed at the journalist instead of Ms. Coakley.

2.  Is it really that unreasonable to use "Devout Catholic" as shorthand for someone who believes what the Pope is peddling?

Further,

Come on, she's just stating reality.

If you're an alcoholic, and you work in a bar, either come to terms with it or work somewhere else. If you hate smoking, and you work in a convenience store, same thing.

This is really a measure of the growing religious intolerance in the U.S. Refusing treatment is more about insisting other people adopt your views than practicing your own. If for whatever reason you're unable to do the job, then of course, it's time to change employment.

Live is short enough. Work at something you believe in.

It might be that Martha Coakley will be the one who will be changing careers.

I have to agree here.. they know going in what may be expected in the environment of an ER. If they can not, for what ever reason perform those actions called for then they should not work there. They should find a provider who does not offer the services in question. This choice must be made by the person and the person or persons employing them... and is no business of a government official.

That though is in the land of Common Sense... and that is not were we live. No people will take this as a personal slam on the faithful of the Catholic Church rather then look at the reason behind it. There are plenty more note worthy gaffs from Coakley and her people to hang a hat on... the drum beating on this one is well.. weak.

If Martha wins  I will be hugely surprised.
The public is knee jerking, what a waste.

servantforuse -> RE: Martha Coakley: Devout Catholics 'Probably shouldn't work in the emergency room' (1/18/2010 12:42:22 PM)

She was expected to win that seat walking away. If Brown wins it will be one of the biggest political upsets ever.

mnottertail -> RE: Martha Coakley: Devout Catholics 'Probably shouldn't work in the emergency room' (1/18/2010 12:44:41 PM)

she expected her to win that seat in a walkaway? who would be shocked and awed? anybody other than you? or are you getting this off the radio right now from rush the imbicile?

maybemaybenot -> RE: Martha Coakley: Devout Catholics 'Probably shouldn't work in the emergency room' (1/18/2010 12:44:42 PM)

CallaFirestorm: I agree, what's the big deal. There are nurses who are Jehovah Wittnesses and don't hang blood products, I've swapped off with them or hung the blood and monitored the patient. Following the logic of some, a nurse who is a JW, should not work as a nurse. I would disagree, there are  one or two procedures I cannot do, because I pass out. My co workers have always done that procedure for me and I picked up something for them. It has never, ever been a big deal.

CassandraAlexis -> RE: Martha Coakley: Devout Catholics 'Probably shouldn't work in the emergency room' (1/18/2010 1:10:30 PM)

Unfortunately I have been the patient on the side of a doctor refusing to give me EC. It was not a catholic hospital. My gyno was closed and the number on the machine gave the number for the on-call doctor at the hospital. When I called, the on-call doctor, happened to be my new primary care physician who I had only seen once. He told me that it was against his religious views to give me any form of birth control even if it was an emergency and I would have to "figure something else out".

Lets just say that after a more than rough afternoon and evening at a hospital emergency room over 45 minutes away, waiting in a waiting room for almost 6 hours for a pill, also the $130 co-pay for the hospital vs the $15 perscription copay if he had just written it, I was more than livid. And the next business day immediately changed doctors.

How could I trust that he was caring for me how it was best for me and not how it was best for him? Not to mention if he was that way about EC, imagine if I ever had a bdsm related issue.

kittinSol -> RE: Martha Coakley: Devout Catholics 'Probably shouldn't work in the emergency room' (1/18/2010 1:22:34 PM)

It gets tiresome how religious superstition gets in the way of medical care. It really does.

servantforuse -> RE: Martha Coakley: Devout Catholics 'Probably shouldn't work in the emergency room' (1/18/2010 1:33:10 PM)

'religious superstition'. Some see protecting the life of an unborn child a little differently. Some don't care.

Servant, I think you're right, it's starting to come out now how she kept an innocent man in prison when she knew he was guilty for "political expediency."
Shouldn't people who do that be prosecuted?

servantforuse -> RE: Martha Coakley: Devout Catholics 'Probably shouldn't work in the emergency room' (1/18/2010 1:36:15 PM)

Absentee ballots counted so far show Brown with a 16 % lead among those voters..

It's awfully convenient how the cannibal cult that worships the invisible sky wizard find "religious" justifications for the things they personally don't like yet eschew those same tenets when it suits their needs.

And those are the people who should find a job where they can't use their religious convictions as an excuse to not do what they're being paid for.

They have a right to work where they want. It's the politically correct thing to do..
