Jeffff -> Beer Review (1/17/2010 5:59:18 PM)

For those of you who think you can do better than Miller Lite.

I am enjoying a Bells "HopSlam" ale. It was released last week.

It is an Imperial India Pale Ale or IIPA. It is pretty fucking delightful. Compared to the Dogefishhead 90 min IIPA
I would say it is not as sweet, a bit more hoppy and it has a nice "pine" hint to it.

At 10%  abv it has a nice kick too.

Jeff

I really like the American IPAs (they're not all imperial) I've tried, Jeffff. The Sierra Nevada one is really nice as well. Goose Island do a really good IPA as well, but that one's probably a bit too hopped for some tastes.
I'll have to see if I can find any of the Bells over here, though. A 10% IPA? Well cool.

Say, Jeffff...what other beers would taste like Modelo Negro?

Jeffff -> RE: Beer Review (1/18/2010 6:23:00 AM)

You might want to try a Shiner Bock. It is a dark yet crisp beer.

DesFIP -> RE: Beer Review (1/18/2010 6:24:49 AM)

He's a fan of Sam Adams, Boston Lager. Won't drink the seasonal stuff. And I can't remember which dark beer he drinks, doesn't buy it to bring home, just drinks it when we go to a local restaurant that claims it has 300 beers.

O'Hara's Irish Stout, or Guiness Extra Stout.

Yep... One of my go too beers is Dogfishhead 90 minute Imperial India Pale Ale, thats 9% abv.

The 60 min IPA is 6%.

cjan -> RE: Beer Review (1/18/2010 11:12:37 AM)

Drat.

cjan -> RE: Beer Review (1/18/2010 11:13:59 AM)

I'm enjoying some seasonal brews. Anchor Steam's is good. So is Blue Moon and, yes , Smuttynose seasonal from New Hampshire.

Never saw Chimay's I'll have to look for it.

I don't drink beer, but my husband does.  He swears by Westvleteren 12 but good luck getting your hands on one!

As a renowned beer geek there is nothing currently made by any major brewery that is not surpassed several times over by one of the "newer" micro breweries.

Sam Adams, Sierra Nevada ,for exdample, do occassionally make some interesting brews  but on the hole they have become rather boring and rather uninspiring.

The Belgians still make some very tasty beveri but what is going on here in the States is some really astounding shit.

If you think that Guiness is tasty then an easy jump would be to try O'l Rasputin made by North coast brewery.  For a bigger leap try Founders breakfast stout, and if you dig coffee there are a pile of very tast java stouts that are now available.  The Grandaddy of the stouts would have to be Bell's Expedition stout or Three Floyds Dark Lord.

The thing that kind of blows is that the alcohol content of these beers routinely reaches the 6-12% plateau which makes them tasty and yet soooo devastating.

I brew a nice IPA but I prefer to keep around 6 to 6.5% ABV.  That way you can have a few without getting shitfaced.  Try brewing your own, You can brew something that would normally cost you $10+/ 6-pack for a bit less than buying bud or miller.  Most major cities and a lot of small ones have a brew store and homebrew club to help you get started.  I started in 88.

Jeffff -> RE: Beer Review (1/18/2010 12:03:51 PM)

I brewed for about 2 years. It was  good enough beer, I just got tired of the hassle.

Stouts and ales are pretty easy. A lager or a pilsner is harder.

Semi-local folks, they do make a good brew.
