I didn't like beer until I was in the SCA & had some amazing home-brewed stouts. Then I discovered that I do like beer, if it's dark & rich & kinda creamy / low hops, with lots of complex sub-tastes. Yum . ... ..

The chocolate stouts I've had are akin to the coffee stouts someone mentioned previously in the thread, where the roasted cacao or coffee beans complement the barley, hops, et al, in the brewing process . . .. Not my fave, I vastly prefer the oatmeal stouts.

I'm a fan of the "Cider" type beer.
(Is that beer???)

I had a very nice one recently -- Magner's Irish Cider based with apples.

I like WoodChuck, the apple flavor as well.

Next time we go to the bar, I want to try Sea Dog Bluepaw Wheat Ale made with blueberries.  Sounds interesting!

I prefer sweet, and can't drink anything with a sour after taste.

Cider ain't beer.

I stopped being fond of Magners not long after it was re-branded from being Bulmers Irish coz it wasn't long after that that they changed the recipe.
My favourite (of which I could find) bottled US Cider is the Woodchuck single varietal Granny Smith.

Given your liking the Magners ... have you tried the "Cider Jack" or Woodchuck Amber ? I'd have thought they would sit well on your table. Details in link.
Work in progress : http://piratewedding2009.com/piratesciderguideus.aspx (more to follow very soon ... sampling to resume imminently)

My pick for best bottled UK cider is currently a toss up between Aspall Premier Cru (Suffolk) and Gwnt Y Ddraig Gold Medal (Cymru/Wales), both award winning, they come "proper" cider strength, so be careful [;)]

PiratesCiderGuideUK is well under construction ... hic ... burp ... lol.

When it comes to beer I would do what the smart Czechs, Germans and Poles do and head for Slovakia. Beers like Zlaty Hrad and Sparta are favourites.

I also like a Bud (the real Czech Budwar, not the imitation American stuff) and speak up for the Poles who also have their own decent beers - Warka, Tyskie, Dolijdy and anything out of the Jablonno Brewery near Warsaw.

Thumbs up also for Berliner Kindl - which is an excellent beer if you're having a curry.

I prefer Kokanee....and on a side note its the only beer made by outcast cult members that used to be led by warren jeffs [:D]

Alexander Keiths isn't bad either
