I rarely purchase it in their stores - maybe 2 or 3 cups a year - but I do brew it at home exclusively. I always marvel when folks drink good beer/cheap coffee or vice versa.

DomiGuy: Thanks for the stout leads. New to me.

Those who travel through Seattle may be familiar with Manny's Pale Ale. They only produce for kegs (and, I gather, growlers if you go to the brewery) but it's a nice break from the hard core hops (which I love), but is, in my opinion, a perfectly balanced crisp, not-too-sweet ale.

And of course, should you be traveling through Juneau, treat yourself to whatever the Alaskan Brewery has in "rough draft" mode. Don't judge them by their larger-batched Amber Ale (on all Alaska Air flights)--far too sweet for most of the people I know. The rest of their brews are damned good.

I must not be channelling those monks well enough. While I appreciate the craft of those Trappist brews, I've never been able to handle their sweetness.

Jeff, Domi, et al, can have the hoppy beers, not my thang.

I like a creamy oatmeal stout, ideally served at room temperature (the point of a stout is to fully taste the beer, not hide flavors behind the tongue-numbing effect of 'ice cold'). In the bottle's good.

Chocolate stouts are nice, too. Not big on Guinness, it's that bitter, hoppy thing, tho' if the choice is any other beer & Guinness, I'll have the Guinness.

Of course, I don't drink very often or very much, so, it's more a theoretical thing . . . . .

ETA: Oh, yeah, & microbrew all the way, lol .... . But of course . .. . .

We need to see some of this alleged real beer from America; this would improve the reputation of the US no end, should it be true that brewing has diversified away from the rats' piss otherwise known as Budweiser and the other big brands we get here. This could well become the foreign policy breakthrough of this century.

So, are these breweries spread across the US or are they concentrated in any one or two states?

(Edited to explain that in the US the term for Cider is Hard Cider ... didn't come across "soft cider" though lol)


While I'm back at the editing  ... I might add that we actually sampled several of these products, which was the only way we were going to find out what kind of stuff was in them ... kinda like "Russian Roulette"  since the place we got them hadn't a clue what was in them.

The rat's piss must be a very "light" substance I guess, they fill HUGE bottles with it and it is SO gassy that it floats around in the air, so much so they have to tether it down to stop it floating away. A very clever storage idea to save on warehouse space though !

They do that on tap? I've only ever seen it in bottles. I thought the only guiness you could get on draught was the draught guinness stuff.

There's quite a few American producers of decent lagers, porter and even ales. They tend to be smaller companies than the manufacturers of vile swill like Budweiser or Coors, though more in the way that Apple are a smaller company than Microsoft. There are also a lot of small regional microbreweries, but most of that doesn't get imported over here, sadly.
You can probably find something half decent with a funny accent in the local offie or the booze aisle of the supermarket. Safeway used to do the Sierra Nevada and Goose Island stuff before it was swallowed up by Morrison's.

The breweries are spread out all over the country. Bells is in Michigan and 3 Floyd's is in Indiana.

Both are available on tap and in the bottle.

What has been happening over the last few years is that many brewers have ditched any notion of the German beer purity laws and subsequently have been producing some of the most wacked out tastiest beveri ever to be seen by man.  Now other countries are picking up and following right along.

Being a self proclaimed "hop-head" I have loved what is now being produced.  Out on the West Coast you have  a plethora of breweries that really excel in kicking out some top notch I.P.A.'s, such as Stone Brewery which makes Arrogant Bastard Ale, or Green Flash which bangs out several tasty IPA's.

I could go on and on, but these would be just a few worth checking out.   It seems that the best stouts are for the most part brewed right here in the Midwest.

I think that we are fortunate to have two breweries, Bells and Three  Floyds that are relatively close to Chicago. Of course there is Goose Island which I don't really care for the majority of what they "mass produce" but they do have a tasty Imperial IPA and if you go to the brewery on Clybourn St. They provide some tasty options that they do not bottle.

I don't know about the rest of the country, but the Pacific coast seems positively covered in little breweries. Here in Chico (a gigantic city of 100,000, lol) we have two -- Sierra Nevada & Butte County Brewing Co.

I've found the best place to look for obscure beers is the local health food stores, weirdly enough. They typically stock single bottles of all kinds of micro-brews . ... . . . Of course, that's in addition to the specialty liquor stores, tho' the health food store does not stock anything resembling Bud or Coors or such like . . . . . [;)]
