Bill Clinton helps to unload a delivery of medical supplies in Port-au-Prince

The French minister in charge of humanitarian relief called on the UN to "clarify" the American role amid claims the military build up was hampering aid efforts.

Alain Joyandet admitted he had been involved in a scuffle with a US commander in the airport's control tower over the flight plan for a French evacuation flight.

"This is about helping Haiti, not about occupying Haiti," Mr Joyandet said.Geneva-based charity Medecins Sans Frontieres backed his calls saying hundreds of lives were being put at risk as planes carrying vital medical supplies were being turned away by American air traffic controllers.

But US commanders insisted their forces' focus was on humanitarian work and last night agreed to prioritise aid arrivals to the airport over military flights, after the intervention of the UN.The diplomatic row came amid heightened frustrations that hundreds of tons of aid was still not getting through. Charities reported violence was also worsening as desperate Haitians took matters into their own hands.

We should never listen to the French and that includes right now. They can all go pound sand.

Nice picture of Bill Clinton, don't you think?

masmiss -> RE: US accused of 'occupying' Haiti as troops flood in (1/18/2010 4:37:43 PM)

Yes, it seems our actions in Haiti are not "perfect" in the eyes of the French.

rulemylife -> RE: US accused of 'occupying' Haiti as troops flood in (1/18/2010 4:39:42 PM)

They were turned away because the small airport at Port-au-Prince has little parking space to begin with and much of that was damaged by the earthquake.

Maybe you should give them that big statue on Ellis Island back?

LadyEllen -> RE: US accused of 'occupying' Haiti as troops flood in (1/18/2010 4:42:03 PM)

In other news it was reported today that aid is spoiling in the hot sun at the airport, for want of sufficient vehicles to move it out to where its needed, together with escorts to ensure the aid is distributed properly and doesnt become subject to free for all mobbing of the vehicles.

These factors taken into account it would seem foolish at this stage to keep landing more aid to spoil in the hot sun, pending the arrival of enough vehicles and escort personnel to deliver it out. The US being in close proximity and with plentiful personnel, means of transport, logistical systems, reconnaissance resources et al, it would seem reasonable to suppose the US might take a lead on things in all of those respects. Hence it might be a good thing if former colonial powers kept their noses out and didnt let them get put out of joint overmuch by the situation.

Maybe the French can't land anything until said C-130 leaves?
Or more likely the Telegraph is talking shit again.

LadyEllen -> RE: US accused of 'occupying' Haiti as troops flood in (1/18/2010 4:48:13 PM)

Theyre landing quite often m'dear. We watched one coming in live on Channel 4 news about 1940hrs UK time this evening. The French probably have some, but quite why that would be relevant I'm not sure.

Great idea.  But the shipping costs would be astronomical.

Doh!

We can't sneak anything by the French OR that wily Hugo Chavez...

Chavez says U.S. occupying Haiti in name of aid

CARACAS (Reuters) – Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez on Sunday accused the United States of using the earthquake in Haiti as a pretext to occupy the devastated Caribbean country and offered to send fuel from his OPEC nation.

"I read that 3,000 soldiers are arriving, Marines armed as if they were going to war. There is not a shortage of guns there, my God. Doctors, medicine, fuel, field hospitals, that's what the United States should send," Chavez said on his weekly television show. "They are occupying Haiti undercover."

"On top of that, you don't see them in the streets. Are they picking up bodies? ... Are they looking for the injured? You don't see them. I haven't seen them. Where are they?"

Chavez promised to send as much gasoline as Haiti needs for electricity generation and transport.

A perennial foe of U.S. "imperialism," Chavez said he did not wish to diminish the humanitarian effort made by the United States and was only questioning the need for so many troops.

It still staggers me, it has been over a week since the disaster and the ball ain't quite rolling yet out there as regards providing aid to the needy. What happened to all this high tech equiptment the military are mean't have, these go anywhere vehicles that cost millions of whatever currency, what about the Chinooks and other heavy lift transport VTOL aircraft, they don't need much flat space to operate from, it is all taking too long, people are dying.  No berths in the ports, well cruise liners are still managing to berth further down the coast, what's wrong with traveling a few miles to the affected areas, helicopters make short work of distance. If it was a theatre of war, do you think it would have taken this long to get the troops and hardware where they are needed.

Or is it politics has it's hand in this.

The French were turned away because they didn't bring any Fau Grau with them...

Note that the French want the EU to send a substantial force of armed police to "assist" the forces now deploying.

But this of course is not about occupation.

I agree- the US is occupying.

We had plenty of time to return the rightfully elected Aristed to prez office.  We stonewalled and stand in the way.  So yes-  we occupy.

Consider too that Blackwater is there.
