i think people are being too hard on Merc and Lafayette Lady....many people don't see how much racism exists in this country because they themselves aren't racist. They may have never been the victims of corporate racism or sexism(or even witnessed it) so their experiences dictate their views. The fact of the matter is, as long as people like Dumb Imus refer to talented female collegiate athletes as "nappy headed hoes" there will be a need for an alternative to the Miss America pagaent. Many people find dark skin, curly hair, and full features ugly...or less than admirable when compared the features of our caucasian counterparts. There are many like Imus....however to put Merc in a group with him is ignorant and uncalled for. As long as people are flabbergasted when they meet me face to face, and actually say in a business setting, " I didn't know you were black... over the phone"(in a disappointed uncomfortable voice that differes from the free-flowing phone rapport we shared earlier) there will be a need for inclusion programs. That doesn't mean i don't have a problem with some factors of affirmative action....but i know for a fact that corporate America to a large extent, is very much an "Old Boys" club. The face of corporate America did change largely in part to anti-discrimination laws, and their enforcement. This White's Only" league may not be legal based on anti-discrimation laws....yes it's reminiscent of Jim Crow...and absurd in it's blatant racism....but i think alot of the anger and name calling on this thread is mis-directed. The problem is alot bigger than a few posters on CM and won't be helped in any way by exchanging nasty jabs . http://portal.unesco.org/shs/en/ev.php-URL_ID=1376&URL_DO=DO_TOPIC&URL_SECTION=201.html http://www.heartsandminds.org/links/racelinks.htm http://www.adl.org/ http://www.ceousa.org/ We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, ... all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color ~Maya Angelou
