ORIGINAL: kittinSol I'm still wondering whether the venture's legal. Quite simply, because the endeavor is to start a PROFESSIONAL league, playing basketball would be the players JOB....no it is not legal. Kind of surprised that there was any question regarding the legality of discrimination in the workplace. But there IS discrimination in the workplace. Has anyone ever met a Hooters MAN? How many restaurants or bars will only hire one sex or the other? How often in a Chinese restaurant do you see front of the house employees that are not Asian? Obviously there are ways to hire only particular employees that fit a certain "qualification." As Merc mentioned, we have Miss Black America. At one time blacks weren't permitted to compete, but they are now, so Miss Black America is now discriminatory. What's really interesting is that there are groups and organizations that allow only certain groups of people. How many people get upset over an all gay group, an all women's group, all men's groups, Native American groups, groups for only Jewish or Catholic people, Hispanic Organizations or all the groups where only blacks or other minorities are allowed to be a part of? Not many. But the second that something is going to be "all white" it is instantly associated with the KKK or racism. And yet so many don't see that as being racist in itself. Why the belief that only whites engage in racism? Any time any group only permits people who fit a particular ethnic group, religious affiliation, sexual preference, gender, etc. is engaging in discrimination. Does that mean that the Daughters of the American Revolution should stop excluding men and immigrants? Of course not. But it is simply foolish and ignorant to think that every time someone wants an all white group that they are doing so out of racism and affiliation with the KKK. To do so makes you no better than the KKK because it means you are really just as racist as they are. There was mention of Affirmative Action. It certainly is sad that such a law was needed in the first place. But the reality is that if the qualifications for a position need to be lowered as part of Affirmative Action, it really just perpetuates the concept that one group is not as good as another, and that really wasn't the purpose of having Affirmative Action to begin with. The reality is that there are some things that for whatever reason, certain groups of people just don't seem to want to do. How many black olympic swimmers do we see? They aren't forbidden to be part of the team, but apparently they are not interested. How many black country western stars are there? Is it because all the white cowboys won't let them do it or because not many blacks want to sing country western? A person can find racism and discrimination anywhere if they really want to. Seems like more than a couple people on this thread find it everywhere they look. Doesn't mean that it exists, but it does mean that when you feel a need to keep finding it, you are perpetuating the problem.
