I base my opinion on what I see on a day to day basis. There are hospitals in Virginia for the poverty stricken, they also provide dental care. The fact that the nearest one is about an hour and a half away and how you are going to get there is your problem. If you are homeless on the street without a vehicle or enough money to buy food is irrelevant, no? There are free clinics in Virginia,.and if you are lucky enough to be near one of these clinics, you will get healthcare on a sliding scale or at no charge. There is also medicaid to help you, if you qualifiy. Don't kid yourself into believing that there are not needy and hungry people right here. I am sure it does depend on where you live. If you are in an area that has more programs, of course there is more help. Not all areas have those programs however. I do not actually live in Richmond, (I just have that listed on my profile because it is the closest city to me), if I did then maybe my opinion would change as I know there is more help available there. What I see are people milling around without shelter (because even in the city, there are only so many beds in the shelters so people *including children* do get turned away, every single day.) I see people walking without shoes and proper clothing when the weather turns cold. I see people who are starving because they do not have money for food. There was a park in Richmond where homeless people used to go and camp there and compile what food they have to share with each other. The business owners thought it was unsightly and would prevent people from shopping in that area. So not only did the city officals run them out of there, but they started arresting them as vagrants. Once released, more of the same. They were not directed into programs to help get them on their feet. The social services here are so extended trying to help the needy/unemployed/displaced families that they literally are running out of money. Why isn't our government stepping in to help the states with the problems at home first? What are we sending billions of dollars here and there, without taking care of our country? Things are fucked up in other places, I get that. They are fucked up here too. You can spend your dollars where you want, just as I will do the same. America does have needy people. Believe it or not. That's up to your perception where you think the need lays, just as it is mine that we need money here.
