“the ability of any one event to inspire some fundamental shift in giving is limited.”
-Danial Gross

So send all you want, the US does not ignore their own. (We only ignore Louisiana… well… actually Bush did that.)

World news doesn’t cover our instant responses to a smaller local crisis. The global news community only reports when we provide foreign aid or have a huge domestic crisis like 911, Katrina etc.

To see anyone say that we don’t help our own only tells me that their area is mostly crisis free and they don’t see examples of our giving spirit in the local news. If you lived in Florida where we have hurricanes or some other region that has been affected by a catastrophy, your opinion might be different and better educated.

Just my take on this...I would have a difficult time thinking of a U.S. cause that overshadows a child losing their limbs with nothing but Tylenol for pain control.

I base my opinion on what I see on a day to day basis.

There are hospitals in Virginia for the poverty stricken, they also provide dental care.

The fact that the nearest one is about an hour and a half away and how you are going to get there is your problem. If you are homeless on the street without a vehicle or enough money to buy food is irrelevant, no?

There are free clinics in Virginia,.and if you are lucky enough to be near one of these clinics, you will get healthcare on a sliding scale or at no charge.

There is also medicaid to help you, if you qualifiy.

Don't kid yourself into believing that there are not needy and hungry people right here.

I am sure it does depend on where you live.
If you are in an area that has more programs, of course there is more help.
Not all areas have those programs however.
I do not actually live in Richmond, (I just have that listed on my profile because it is the closest city to me), if I did then maybe my opinion would change as I know there is more help available there.

What I see are people milling around without shelter (because even in the city, there are only so many beds in the shelters so people *including children* do get turned away, every single day.)

I see people walking without shoes and proper clothing when the weather turns cold.

I see people who are starving because they do not have money for food.

There was a park in Richmond where homeless people used to go and camp there and compile what food they have to share with each other.
The business owners thought it was unsightly and would prevent people from shopping in that area. So not only did the city officals run them out of there, but they started arresting them as vagrants. Once released, more of the same. They were not directed into programs to help get them on their feet. The social services here are so extended trying to help the needy/unemployed/displaced families that they literally are running out of money.
Why isn't our government stepping in to help the states with the problems at home first? What are we sending billions of dollars here and there, without taking care of our country?

Things are fucked up in other places, I get that. They are fucked up here too. You can spend your dollars where you want, just as I will do the same.
America does have needy people. Believe it or not. That's up to your perception where you think the need lays, just as it is mine that we need money here.

Hundreds upon hundreds are not laying in the streets mutilated and without care here. They are not having major surgery perfomed upon them without the benefit of anesthesia here.

If you are comfortable with your way, good for you! I cannot stand idly by however when I know that things are past desperate in Haiti. It just means that I split my usual help up a bit more.

PA, unless you have conditionally given me the money, you cannot tell me what to do with it.

I would venture to say our welfare system is far better than the Haitian welfare system and if US citizens wish to assist Haitian citizens, it is their right.

Per photos of some of our 'tent cities' Las Vegas as an example, those people are living in tents because of piss poor judgment. No one forced them to purchase homes they could not afford with creative financing.

I am not saying there are not needy people in the US. I am saying that we all have a right to send our money where we wish. Even to Ghana or Nigeria to purchase a hot blonde slave. I am guessing there are few Haitians that have that ability right now.

Exactly. I do not think you should not send money there if you want to. Thats completely up to you, it is your money after all. I just choose to use my money to help the people I see here instead.

But why instead? Why not send some to help local homeless people and some to help out the Haitians? I donate regularly to a local charity called Centraid through my payroll and just donated to the Red Cross as well. Every bit helps even if you can only give a small amount.

I find the people out here who are against giving aide not surprising. They seem to have an inability to grasp other concepts as well.

Are there people in the U.S. that could use some help? Absolutely.  Are there people starving to death every day and countless dying becuase they lack the ability to get to the most basic level of nutrition or health care....No. This is not happening on any type of a wide scale basis.

It only helps us, the U.S., to assist Haiti in their time of need.  If you are so cold that you cannot see that there are people that will die without some of your assistance then you place no value when it comes to the plight of your fellow man. Therefore,  I place no value on your words .

It is high time to start realizing that we do live in a global economy. Our actions have impact far beyond than what we once perceived.  It is not only a humanitarian mission but if you leave people without hope they will seek anything that offers something comparable.  It is in our national interests that we start helping those less fortunates.  Perception is a great deal of what matters here.

You help Haiti and indirectly you are benefitting from that aide as ell.

It's called Protectionism.

They apply it to their houses, their communities and to their country. Close the borders, keep our produce, eliminate foreign aid and trade.

The argument being that this looks after 'our own'.

Unfortunately, it doesnt work. Domestic issues don't get solved, they multiply.

Of course, they could also be heartless cunts with no sense of global charity.

That was pretty much my thought on the matter.

Every so often I come across an attitude that just dumbfounds me, not wanting to (not just not wanting to but actually arguing the point) help people at the level of desperation that the Haitians are dealing with is pretty close to the top of the charts.

Personally I wish I could do a whole lot more than I'm able to do. That ten dollars seems so paltry and small in the face of such need.

Ok... here's a novel concept....

Instead of telling people to stop helping others, why not start a movement to get help for the groups you are concerned about?

Ah but that would be work, Aqua. It's so much easier to just complain about it than it is to write letters, get a petition going etc.

It definately requires more energy than a youtube video.

That makes the small ten bucks I could send seem like nothing. It makes me feel ill to read about the desperation and pain, makes me very angry to read that there is so little organization.

It is not the fault of the US exactly (having trouble formulating my thoughts here) but seriously I would have thought that a country this large would have the means to push medical and food supplies through. So I am disappointed in us and others, sending money is helpful yeah but unless it is properly directed it does nothing.

Camille,

My point was that you ACTED and that all help is needed. As far as getting supplies through , there was originally a bottleneck through the one functioning runway. There was no existing infrastucture left standing. Everything had to be built from the ground up. I would have liked more speed and coordination too.
