ORIGINAL: Jeffff There is a valid argument for not wanting your name published. One of the few things that a criminal can sell for more than it's face value are stolen guns. If your name is published everyone knows you own at least one gun. It could increase the chance of you being a victim of a burglary. Which then put the gun in the hands of criminals. So, let me try to follow this argument. Someone has a gun to defend himself and the NRA tells us that those whose homes are armed are less likely to be the target of home invasions if criminals know guns are present. But when it comes to publicly listing those who have guns the NRA tells us this is wrong because they will become targets of home invasions/burglaries by those who want to steal their guns. That's one reason. One other reason is no conservative groups happen to be protected classes. Ie. Plenty of scumbag employers are out there that will fire employees that they discover own weapons. It's no one's damn business if you decide to exercise any right. And i'm sorry you've distorted the NRA's message. In areas of the country/world where gun ownership is common confrontational crimes are a lower overall percentage of all crimes than area's where the citizens are reliably unarmed. Since a criminal does not know if a gun exists in a particular home or not, the people that don't own guns benefit from widespread citizen firearm ownership also. Hence, the last line of that sign. You're much more likely to suffer a home invasion in jolly old London, England than say Austin, Texas. And, *duh*, if you're looking to steal a gun from a home, it would actually be useful to have a government tabulated list. Of course, non galatically stupid criminals will buy it on the black market, which will reduce their chances of getting shot at for the dubious privilege of gaining a firearm that in most cases will have it's serial number known by either it's owner or the gun store he bought it from.
