Moral Meat

Status: offline 		So I was having a discussion with someone today who told me I was immoral for being a meat eater.  Now, I try(and some times fail as a college student) to purchase free range and farmer's market meat and other items.  I think that it's important as an aspiring chef to support the community in its production of meat.  It ain't cheap, though.  I fully admit I purchase meat from the regular grocery stores that aren't organic, free range, etc.  I can't always afford it.  One of my dear friends, on here actually, is a vegetarian, and she has her own reasons.  I don't think it's wrong for her to make the choice to be vegetarian.  It's her choice. 

But does eating meat make you immoral?  Does eating meat make you a murderer?

Status: offline 		No and No. Human beings are omnivorous creatures. We are designed to eat both plants and animals, so morality doesn't enter into it.

I eat meat, but let's not kid ourselves here: the way most meat is produced, by massacring animals in abattoirs, is an abomination.

As long as we're all aware of what we partake in *shrug*.

Edited to add "most", because there is free range out there - but even that's not a panacea to the horror.

It's immoral if it goes against your personal ethics and morals. 

Murder is defined as a crime of unlawful killing.  It isn't unlawful to kill an animal for it's meat, unless you hunt out of season.  I'm more concerned with the ethical practices of the farms where most of the meat I consume comes from.  I have my own feelings and opinions on this and they apply to me, I can share them with others but it's a personal choice if someone chooses to buy a whole chicken from Costco instead of getting it directly from the farmer who butchered it a day or two ago. 

While it's my opinion the practices of factory farms should be outlawed, at this time they aren't and so, again in my opinion, it comes down to personal ethics and choice.

I agree. I object to factory animals and to factory people. It is a sure sign of moral poverty.

I do not object to eating non-human meat. I do object to eating human meat.

Status: offline 		Well, I brought that up as well.  In order for one species to survive, whether that species be plant or animal, another must give its life.  We, as human beings, are generally designed to consume meat products.  We require the protein and iron that meat imparts.  It isn't a question of, "I hate animals so I'm going to eat them" for the most part.  It's a question of survival. 

I respect the animals that gave their lives for me to survive.  As I told the girl I was arguing with, I show a great deal of love and reverence in the way that I prepare the meat.  I think it's important to respect the environment and the animals we consume and live off of.  Do I believe humans are the superior race?  Sort of.  I believe we were placed on this earth by the Goddesses and Gods to be the shepherds and caretakers of this earth and the animals on it.  I think that we should take care of the environment while still living as happily as we can.  A balance. 

I am not without fault.  I do buy meat at grocery stores when I cannot afford to purchase farm-raised meat.  It was much easier when I lived in Richmond and we had a year-round farmer's market and I lived near more organic stores.  I TRY to be as animal friendly as possible, but at the end of the day, I respectfully say that I must survive, and as a college student on a pittance income with bills to pay, I will eat what I can to do so. 

We used to hunt when we lived in Texas.  I did not laugh when I had to remove feathers and skin from the dove bodies we ate.  I did not joke about the venison we butchered so that we could eat. 

I think that's the big thing for me.  Perfect can never be achieved, no matter whose moral compass you try to live by.  We do our best to survive, and if that means eating meat, I'll do it.  Besides, Daddy would be awfully sad if I stopped making my Asian-inspired chicken dishes.

Status: offline 		I have lived most of my life in rural/small town Iowa. When I was a little girl I remember going with my grandfather to take a steer in to be butchered. I peeked around the corner when the butcher shot the steer. I have raised meat animals and butchered them myself. I have been deer hunting and assisted in the processing of that. I have gone to a farm, pointed into a herd of sheep and said "I want that one", loaded it up and assisted in the demise and processing of it. I am working on being able to raise one or two hogs for butcher this summer.

I venture to say I am quite comfortable with my meat eating ways.
