Status: offline 		Jamie Oliver (deep lust filled sigh) and other famous chefs over here had a massive drive last year to push the idea of standards in farms and persuading people to eat free range, i admit I don't eat free range I can't afford it but when I can I buy meat from this new initiative that the chefs have set up. Basically they have more room and things to play with and all that, its not perfect but its better, I was shocked by the standards that chickens lived in, the speed that they grew from babies to full grown animals, the ammonia burns on their legs.

I am and always will be a meat eater, I have in my life only met one person who could honestly say that they were vegetarian due to morals, actually a vegan (which if using the moral argument is the only way it makes sense) every other one was a hypocrite, meat is everywhere.

Status: offline 		I find it interesting that this should come up, when I've recently taken up the idea of eating the occasional vegeterian meals for the sake of diet and personal economics.

I believe that we SHOULD eat meat. if we don't then there's going to be a HUGE overpopulation of meat animals. But everything in moderation.

I also agree that it's a complete shitball, the way commercial animals are treated, especially poultry. THAT's immoral and unethical.

However, unless you raise your own livestock and puoltry, and send it in to be butchered yourself, how do you know for sure if it's been treated well or not? All you have is the producers' word. I find that corporate word and promises don't amount to much. Unless you're eating kosher, or halal, you don't know.

Eventually, it all comes down to personal economics and lifestyle. My solution? Eat as well, nutritionally and ethically, as you can afford to. If it means buying free-range chickens vs. Pilgrim's Pride, more power to you. If it means you're gonna swear off meat and buy extruded tofu-TVP-saytan imitation hot dogs so you can feel like you blend in with the carnivores, do that too. But please be kind to the rest of us and restrain it to you and yours.

My personal belief? PETA is the Taliban of Animal Rights, just as Ted Nuggent and Outdoorsmen.

Status: offline 		I rarely wonder if the chickens are sentient enought to actually know they are being treated wrong, dunno maybe it is just me.

I have grass fed free range beef on my farm which hasnt been sprayed with any insecticide or herbicide in at least 30 years, going to expand it to other meatables in the near future, love me some side pork.

Status: offline 		Kind of an amusing thought to me...  Many other animals have just as much cognisant ability as we do, especially predators, and they don't have this debate, and don't think for a second that they'd have qualms about eating us.

As far as the poor cows and chickens in their conditions, well, I think the conditions are disgusting, but that's just because they're dirty.  Otherwise, they're cows and chickens.  Not precisely the most intelligent creatures in the world.  Not like they know of a better life either, so they're not missing anything... even if they had enough brain power to miss something.  Seriously, they're very stupid animals which have a brain that serves not much more purpose than to keep their bodily functions working properly.

Moral dilema?  Not at all.  I eat meat, and I've probably butchered more animals than most people ever see in their life.  And I'll probably process more.

And PETA?  Fine, tell me I can't put a turkey in my oven for thanksgiving... There's going to be meat going in the oven, be it turkey or PETA member.  Their choice.

Remember,  "Vegetables.  It's what food eats."

That being said, I have a number of vegetarian friends, some by choice, some by necessity (god, it must suck to be allergic to animal proteins).  The ones that are by choice, we have an agreement.  I'll respect their choice and not harass them about it, as long as they do the same.  Hell, had one friend who was a vegetarian simply because he didn't really care for the taste or texture of meats.  No moral issue, no health issue, he just didn't like it.  Although he would sneak the occasional bite of bacon.

When I hold my big bbqs, I have no problem doing up things for the vegetarians to eat too.  Just don't tell me I can't eat what I damn well please.  And I just so happen to please to eat meat.
