The slave does what suits the relationship because it fills a need/desire of the slave otherwise the odds are low they would have looked for or stayed in such a relationship.

To attempt to get into further details would be painting with too wide a brush.

Status: offline 		Well today this slave walked the dog, made soup, did three loads of laundry, picked up dry cleaning, changed the faucet on my kitchen sink, dressed up pretty for him and then did fun things as a result and then took a nap on the couch.
I did all of that stuff because the dog had to pee and poop, soup was for dinner, clothes were dirty, dry cleaning was ready to be picked up, the kitchen faucet was broken, he requested the outfit, and I was tired.

On a general and obvious scale, a slave does what is told, hopefully without question providing that the instructions were conveyed in a clear and concise manner.  Another aspect is to be used for the pleasure of the Master/Mistress or to do chores as required.  Pleasure can come in many forms:  humiliation, sexual, for executing pain as the will of the one in charge. 

Why?  Because they want to serve, want to be used, and want that need to fulfill a role and capacity that has some very specific rewards involved for everyone concerned...especially the slave.

Generic, and just my view...

Why? Because it makes them happy, it is the best relationship style for them, because they want to there are so many reasons, some not so pretty, I won't presume I know them all
