Here, of course, I can't find Marmite to save my life - if anyone has a pot, even second-hand  ...

Just mail me anytime kittin and I will send you a couple of jars if you want them.

the.dark.

You're such a darling! But I fear the U.S. Customs wouldn't let it through. They're notoriously anti importation of food stuff, and what with the way Marmite looks, they're bound to confiscate it under the suspicion that it's some kind of bomb-making substance.

That's true.  Mind you, I am willing to try if you want - just give the word.
That said - I would just like to say....
It's SNOWING AGAIN!!!!!!  Garrrrrr.... I thought we'd had enough of the stuff....

I used to get chocolate frogs from a friend in London when Lizard was going through the Harry Potter phrase (still ongoing) and Customs let them through without opening the package. But then I loved them too.

This is the same kid who thought a field mouse was Scabbers and caught it, with biting results. Had to tell her that the movie was fiction and rats and other rodents as pets is unlikely. But then I had the hamster who love being on the table when I was on the computer.

I have mice and gerbils as pets and Rats are VERY sweet clean pets just as a side note lol

one thing we have in common with the brits. We all love Choccie oranges (chocolate oranges that you slam down and eat the slices)

Lizard loves those as well. In fact, Mom and I fixed it to where we placee a twenty in the package. I never seen a kid so happy (she was saving the money for a manga con).

Aquaticsub, when I was grocery shopping yesterday, I went by the pickle section and thought about you. I was this close to getting the kosher baby dills.

Yay! I inspire pickle-breath! Next time it will be even harder to resist and soon my plan for world domination will be complete.

This is a weird thread...all the food sounds disgusting.

As for the poll, I don't hate anyone from Britain. In fact, I have fond memories of an English boyfriend who was all very proper and his bad boy brother....

I won't derail your international food fest any longer...but it is a really hot story.

I know they let Vegemite or Vegimite, or however it's spelled, a year ago. That's how I got to try it. A visitor from Australia brought it with her.

Being someone outside of the USA who has mailed food to the USA, food will go there but it needs to be already packaged. A jar of food is fine.

Australia is the country with the super exrtreme food immigration. If it is packaged though it has a better chance of getting through. Maybe not through the mail though. Through the airport I have brought Girl Guide cookies and they let them through.

My momma was born in Holland and she used to eat picallili all the time. I never cared for it. Then again they ate herring whole too, yikes.

We did used to eat canned meat. Again with toast and fried eggs. Was good tasting but I liked baked brown beans better.

I eat quite a bit of beans but I cook them myself from dried.

If you soak them overnight and then drain them you wont have the gas problems. Beans are awesome nutrition-wise and they taste really great too. I made black beans yesterday with roasted cumin and coriander seeds and tomato sauce (canned by my friends Italian grandmother, mmmm).

There is really good dhal style with cinnamon bark, cloves, cardamon, black peppercorns and cooked slowly with ghee, oh my so good.

Really good apparently to prevent breast cancer, full of Vitamin B and all around great food especially for women. If you dont have large bucks it is also inexpensive. Again, soaking them overnight will alleviate any problem with getting gas.

Another favorite dish when my dad wasnt home for dinner was rice with raisins, cinnamon, butter, milk and sugar. I loved that too. When my dad was home it was always meat and potatoes, not a huge fave for me.

I will confess I have been utterly appalled by the way some of my fellow countrymen have been treated by Americans.

Some cases in point:

Jeremy Clarkson:

Once upon a time, Jeremy did a TV show about the US. In one slot, some Americans took Jeremy hunting with them in a large alligator infested swamp. Do you know what they did with the guy? Did they leave him out there? Hello no, they brought back safe and well!

On another occasion he visited a US Navy carrier. Did they make him walk the plank? Nope!

George Michael:

What about that time he got arrested for lewd behaviour. Couldn't the police officers concerned have used some common-sense, given him a thorough beating and disappeared? I mean come on!

This year I found not just the regular chocolate oranges but dark chocolate ones and toffee ones. It's a tradition for my kids to get them during Hanukkah. We love our chocolate oranges.

It's yeast extract. Similar to Vegimite, but shinier, darker, and better (most Aussies disagree with that assessment :-) .

Thanks for the link, but at that price, what's a relatively cheap food stuff is a luxury I can't quite afford right now *sigh*.

Marmite doesn't have the tartness that vegemite has (the one that causes you to involuntarily scrunch up your face while eating it).  I love both marmite and vegemite.

and Kittin I send my friends in the US and Canada vegemite and it gets through without a problem

And yep Australia is much stricter, a packet of soup mix was confiscated because it had dried lentils in it.  My friend had sent it to me as a an in joke.

If you hear the history of Australia one can understand their stringency. It is more than food, it is many organic things including baskets, certain woods and all sorts of things that wont go through. They xray it all and have detectors picking up potential organic matter.

Yep true our country is very susceptible to foreign bugs etc and it is the farmers who suffer the most when their crops are decimated.

A notebook sent to me made out of dried elephant dung was confiscated as it contained animal products
