You've already received what are probably the more common answers.  There are a couple of others that may fit here as well.  In part, dependent about what kind of toys we're talking about.  Also, it may hinge specifically on the tidbit that these are females who are sounding like they are deploying for a length of time.

Younger unmarried folks who are serving in the military tend to live in the barracks  It isn't uncommon for folks to buy things at one location, and get rid of them when they go to the next.  Uncle Sam only allots so much in weight for 'personal items' which basically includes anything that you own that the military didn't issue you.  The thinning out of personal property happens frequently.  Things that are easily replaced are the first to go.

Another thing to consider.  If single and you have no family living close to you geographically, there's storage.  The military is not responsible for the storage of your personal items during deployment.  That means the service member has to figure out if they want to store their property somewhere in the hopes that they will be in the same location when they get back.  Then, you have to go through the same thing all over again after you come back from deployment.  A good number of deployments are actually PCS moves.

Add to that, depending on the 'toy' in question, there is always that wonderful "don't ask, don't tell" thing that hangs overhead.  This can be tricky in some areas.  For example, a vibrator doesn't have the same implication as a strap on.

Too bad they or we don't have some type of temporary storage available for the sex toys of those who are deployed, like they do with foster care for their pets until they can come home. Like the Deployment Dogs, only it would be the Deployment Dildoes. I'm actually being serious, lol. It seems a shame they they have to throw their toys away when they paid so much money for them.

Well, maybe there would be if Dildos were alive!

... but then that brings up all sorts of other ramifications.

LOL, but what I'm sitting here thinking is that, what a bizarre way to do some patriotic duty, to keep the sex toys for someone while they're out serving their country. What would it take to throw them in a Rubbermaid container, seal it up, and keep it in a storage closet in your home for them until they can return?

This.

Also, as Lady Pact indicated, there are weight restrictions.  I know I go through this every time I travel.  I generally go away for a long time, and now that we are paying for baggage on flights, I'm thinking... ok... 4 seasons, enough clothes for a year, teaching tools (books and such), accessories, my favorite x, y, or z, journal, oh and the electrical outlets are different... hmmmmm - nope none of my stuff that plug in.  How do I get all that in 50 lbs or under?  *sigh*

While I may choose to take some sexy lacy things, the leather gets left at home.  *Not that I have that much*.  I don't want the TSA folks to be pulling out my ... unmentionables.  We call them that for a reason.

Best,
sunshine

Are we ashamed?

When it comes to sexuality in humans, the answer is normally "yes".

The taboo is propagated by the passive leniency of the demonization of it by others because some of us convince ourselves that we're taking the moral high ground if we 'protect' people who are close to us from their own intellectual shortcomings.

It's each individual's prerogative to do so, admittedly, but it's no wonder the stigma continues.

I soooooooo don't agree with you here NZ... If you change the word "humans" to Americans, then I would.  But in many, many cultures sexuality is acceptable, even celebrated.  It's the puritanical influence up in here....

My father thinks he is a perverted horndog.

My mother has been missing from my life for years.

They both know I am sexual and whatnot.... the degree of which is unknown.

I am not ashamed for what I am. I am what I am and if you have any problems with that.... popeye can go punch you in the face (sorry three cups of coffee speaking.)

So if they found out my kinks and whatever it is I do... that is fine. They know I am not in the street barely surviving or sucking cock for meth. There are worse things in the world that I can be doing, but I am not.

So I breathe easy.

That is what I must say.

I don't know about "many, many". In plenty of cultures it's more stigmatized than even in the US. But, it's a good point to address how not all current human cultures (or even historical ones) have as many issues with sexuality as that in this country at the moment.

Are we ashamed, deep down about what we do that we worry about how people will react after we're dead and gone? Do you really think their opinion of you would change? Whether it's lifestyle or just a vanilla with toys.

I don't it's so much as to do with feeling shameful about your proclivities. You cannot always be certain what the sensibilities of loved ones are. This would one way of trying not to hurt them.

Unfortunately, not everyone would agree. Some folks can be real prudes.

As others have expressed, I'm not ashamed, and I enjoy my privacy.

ALSO:  I cherish the control I have to determine with whom I share private things about me (kinky or not).

My best friend and I both had an agreement that if a major catastrophe ever hit, whoever was left standing would gather up all the things we didn't want our mom's, sister, aunts etc. to see.

Sadly, I moved and she let me down.  My chest of all things private was found by my mother.  Who promptly buned them all in some religious ceremony to 'cleanse them'.  I could have told her that I use a very good toy cleaning product, if she'd asked.

When I was in Iraq I was getting some music off of a friend's hard drive.  I noticed a file that was named "delete if I die" and I asked, "what the fuck is this?"  He told me to open it and it was about 100gb of porn.  He said he wanted to make sure if he was killed that someone would delete it before his things were given to his parents.

Using fast reply...

I like to think that whatever I leave behind that the survivors are not fighting over, will at least give them a laugh or something scandalous to talk about. "OMG can you believe that she.........!?!?"

It's too bad my sister-in-law will probably kick off long before I will. She could use some new material.
