1. If, in order to make your post look more sophisticated, you are going to include a phrase in a different language (Latin and French are normally the most popular), make sure you actually spell that phrase correctly. Your inclusion of it may have the opposite effect otherwise.

Especially when you're telling a "newbie" how "things were back when I started", or how "things go at all the functions I attend".

This puts the helpless, mewling newbie at ease.
