PEOPLE make up the government. If it is corrupt, it's because the PEOPLE involved are corrupt.

How does the old adage go - Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely.

And yes the inspectors themselves are held accountable in some jurisdictions,  but the government entity that actually collects and benefits from all the fees, can not and will not be held accountable. See one of my previous post here in this thread if you care for a bit more info than that.

@camilleĀ  Agreed. Just ask any plumber and he'll tell you how important his codes are to the health and safety of buildings and people. Likewise for an electrician and the NEC. How big is "green energy" like solar and wind, out there in ATX? I would think it was pretty popular, given the "Weird" population. (My friend's mom still has one of those tie-dyed shirts)

What's wrong with tye dyed shirts?? Hmph.

I wish that we (US) could turn more importance to wind and solar energy, from all that I've read it is viable in so many areas but people aren't willing to make an investment.

Musicmystery -> RE: City condems house for only using solar (2/1/2010 5:48:25 PM)

We do here! Lots of wind turbines.

In fact, 20% of New York's power comes from renewable sources.

Most of that, to be honest, is hydroelectric, but wind power is growing steadily.

Tenire -> RE: City condems house for only using solar (2/1/2010 5:51:15 PM)

"Keep Austin Weird" ... I kinda thought that Austinites might have more of a "Hippie" PoV on the whole alternative energy thing.

I think it's great. As a matter of fact, I'd love to train up and learn to install the systems for solar and wind energy. I also believe there's more out there that we could use, such as tidal energy, down closer to the Gulf.

If only we could harness hurricanes...LOL

West TX is ideal for wind farms, and it's happening, slowly but surely.

pahunkboy -> RE: City condems house for only using solar (2/1/2010 5:52:45 PM)

yes- but IS the tie dye color fast, is it hypo allergenic,  and was the cotton free range?

Oooh I didn't know you were in Texas, my Owner lives in Houston.

Okies I'm done hijacking (maybe), sorry!

Theft isn't a detriment to others?

Umm... according to the article, the homeowner was is California when the meter was tampered with, but paid the $400 fine.
Jus' sayin.

Tenire -> RE: City condems house for only using solar (2/1/2010 6:28:57 PM)

yes'm, because she was the home owner, she was held liable....

Yes, I know that. But to say the she was stealing power is incorrect.

Musicmystery -> RE: City condems house for only using solar (2/1/2010 7:03:20 PM)

Technically, it is.

Hers is the property getting the extra power.

A picky point, sure, but an important legal distinction, hence her liability.

WyldHrt -> RE: City condems house for only using solar (2/1/2010 7:06:07 PM)

And she paid the fine.

Musicmystery -> RE: City condems house for only using solar (2/1/2010 7:07:08 PM)

So she was guilty and has made restitution.

Tenire -> RE: City condems house for only using solar (2/1/2010 7:12:16 PM)

The whole situation STILL sucks though.

WyldHrt -> RE: City condems house for only using solar (2/1/2010 7:12:28 PM)

NM, not worth it.

Musicmystery -> RE: City condems house for only using solar (2/1/2010 7:12:58 PM)

Exactly.

It gets even better (worse).  In the Kansas City Hyatt disaster, the original design for the walkway support did not meet the requirements of the Kansas City building code.  It was only about 60% of the required strength.  After the field change to the design, which essentially doubled the stress on the 4th story joints, the design was only 30% as strong as required.

So the Kansas City building inspector was there all the time, demanding money and getting paid, demanding that drawings be submitted and getting them.  Drawings that they either did not evaluate or were incompetent to do so. These are the cold hard facts.

So where is the justice in punishing the engineers while doing nothing to the people who approved and inspected their designs?  Who promulgated and published design rules that they were unwilling or unable to enforce, but who took money for their "services" anyway?

I'm wondering if the inspector in these cases is simply verifying that the design, done by licensed professional engineers, is "built to print" when it comes to structural stuff.  An inspector would have to sit over the engineers' shoulders throughout the design process in order to verify code.  This seems impossible to me.

Say the designers come to the municipality with a structural design.  They present the stats on the project; stresses, materials, design margins, etc.  If the engineers' modeling tools or assumptions are screwed up, no one on the inspection side would know about it.  Hell, the design team may not know it; there are plenty examples in engineering when that happens.  The inspector would only see the end product.

Tenire -> RE: City condems house for only using solar (2/1/2010 7:26:58 PM)

One would think that the City Engineers would check their numbers, instead of just leaving it to the other Engineering firm.

AnimusRex -> RE: City condems house for only using solar (2/1/2010 7:54:54 PM)

If someone wanted to make a case that local cities are bureaucratic, slow to embrace innovation, and sometimes have absurd interpretations of laws, hey, no argument from me!

The list is endless- The State of California encourages drought-tolerant yard landscaping such as gravel, cacti, etc.; The City of Glendale, California Dept. of City Planning enforces (with zeal) its ordinance demanding all residents maintain a green sod lawn year round.

But usually, when I see one of these outrageous headlines (City arrests man for praying to Jesus!!!) it turns out to have a bit more complexity, and a whole lot less outrageousness than the headline.

But like with conspiracy theories, there usually is a preset agenda at work; people who are already convinced the world is a bizzare and illogical place seize on any evidence that supports the claim, no matter how tenuous.
