Butter Substitutes? - 2/3/2010 11:10:23 AM

For about the past 4-5 years, I've been using organic butter at the rate of around 1/4lb per month. I've used about one pat per 1/4lb of frozen veggies, per baked potato (both white and sweet), per cup of oatmeal; and 1/2 pat per 1/4lb of baked fish.

I've recently decided to eliminate dairy products from my diet, and I'm now looking for healthy substitute ideas for real butter.

For example, olive oil is healthy, but somewhat on the bland side as a replacement for butter on the foods I've mentioned above. Are there any spices that can be added to olive oil to improve its blandness?

Any other ideas? Calories are of no concern here. Natural only please. No chemically or genetically altered substances.

Thanks!

Why not learn to use spices, rather than relying on flavorful oil?

The "flavor" in butter is the fat.

Earth Balance.
No dairy, and it tastes good.
I see it in most supermarkets too.

I don't think it would be wise for me to further reduce my fat intake, as I can barely maintain my weight as it is. I think it would be very wise for me to replace as much animal fat and protein with as much vegetable fat and protein as possible, however.

Butter and cheese are going to be pretty tough for me to give up though, I'm afraid... which is why I'm looking for ideas.

But yes, I believe spices need to play a much larger role here than they have in the past.

I tried your link. Too bad they don't give the list of ingredients. I'll need to read a label at the store.

Thanks for the lead.

Then why are you cutting out the dairy?

Seems a silly arbitrary decision, at least based on what we know so far.

Anyway....

Nuts are a good source of fat--along with other health benefits.

The first thing that came to mind when I saw CDKITCHEN was Cross Dresser's Kitchen... lol

I don't eat bread, but their recipe sure looks good. Made me hungry, actually...

I electively seek to eliminate casein protein from my diet.

Indeed they are. I eat at least 2 lbs of nuts per week.

If it isn't for bread then I would zero in on recipes for whatever you are trying to substitute the butter for. I know that in many recipes, ground flax seed can be used in place of a fat, in addition to replacing eggs.

I didn't know this. I'll give it a try!

why casein? you think you got milk allergy?

what amino acids do you give up? or do you have the complete complement of amino acids (in the right proportions) without?

No, I have no allergies or intolerances to milk. When I was younger, I did have a lactose intolerance, but this has subsided some years ago.

To answer your question (but hopefully not derail my OP) the more I've learn about animal protein, the more baby steps I've taken to lower my overall consumption over time. Lately, I've seen claims that casein protein poses a larger threat to human health than other animal proteins.

Except for a rare organic milkshake (2 or 3 a year) I do not drink milk or use cream. 3 lbs of organic butter a year probably won't hurt me. However, my cheese consumption has been much higher, at about 1/2 lb a week.

My meat/poultry/fish consumption totals 3-4 oz per day (about 1.5 lbs per week) with at least half of this being fish.

I can see a vegan diet sometime in my future, but I'm not ready to fully commit at this time. But I thought I'd experiment with some healthy substitutes for butter. If I find something I particularly like, I may also substitute it for cheese in many instances.

To the best of my knowledge EB is casein-free.

Sesame oil, walnut oil, hazelnut oil, almond oil, poppyseed oil, grape seed oil, and pumpkin seed oil are pretty flavourful options.
