. Potty - get a rice cooker. Much easier. Measure your rice and water, toss it in, turn it on. Forget about it. You can throw veggies and spices in for the last ten minutes, only one dish to cook. (I don't like to cook in those boil in bags. I always imagine the plastic ends up twisting around in my innards).

Homemade RiceARoni...(love that stuff!!)
Ingredients
1 tablespoon oil1/2 pound pasta, vermicelli or spaghetti1 cup long grain rice1 small onion, chopped1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley leaves, or 1 teaspoon dried parsley2 cups chicken or beef broth

Directions Begin by placing the oil in a pot and breaking the dried noodles into 1/2 to 1-inch pieces. Turn on the heat and stir the noodles in the oil until they begin to brown slightly. Add the rice, onion, parsley, and broth. Stir mixture, cover tightly, and cook as you would regular rice, approximately 20 minutes. Fluff rice with a fork and serve.

Wowie, Holly!!  That sounds yummy!!  I don't like making Rice-a-Roni out of a box because of all the baaaaad stuff in there, not the least of which is the ton of sodium.

I don't even know what Rice-a-Roni is

It's the San Francisco treat!!

Essentially it's all the ingredients above in a box with lots of added sodium & other bad things.

Quiche...you can use pretty much anything but I like tomato, basil and gruyere with a whole wheat crust.

Chicken soup...I use lots of different herbs in mine and thick kluski noodles

Vichyssoise....Really just leek and potato soup but I add fennel or parsnips and cut down on the amount of potatoes.

Roasted Chicken....This is a no-brainer.  I, again, use lots of fresh herbs, garlic, onions, lemons (in the cavity along with salt/pepper/herbs/butter), a bit of very fine olive oil and white wine.  Truss that baby up and roast away.

Pesto....I make all different kinds of pesto; basil, arugula, garlic ramp, spinach, tarragon, sage...whatever sounds tasty and is in season.  Make up a batch and freeze for later.

These are just basics.  The more I cook the less complicated I like my food.

Gosh, if you want to try something really American, rice a roni is not our best representation.  Try Chicago deep dish pizza!  or a Philly Cheese steak!   Or New Orleans Gumbo!  or Tex Mex!

thanks but in regards to pizza i prefer my own homemade thin base....!!!

And apart from that I am open minded to your other options.

When I went to Canada the first time I discovered baked beans soup when that guy and I went out for lunch and we went there again the day before I went back home....gosh I loved that one....though I was told from other Canadians that this would not be typical canadian either...

I am really looking forward to pop over the pond

I think the most important thing to be able to make is a Bechamel. Its the basis for a lot including mousakka to mac n cheese.

BECHAMEL SAUCE

2 tbsp. sweet butter
3 tbsp. flour
1 c. milk
Salt, pepper & nutmeg to taste

1. Melt butter in saucepan. Sprinkle with flour and cook gently, stirring constantly for 5 minutes. Do not let brown.

2. Meanwhile, bring milk to boil. When milk reaches boil, remove butter and flour mixture from heat and pour in the boiling milk all at once. As mixture boils and bubbles, beat in vigorously with wire whisk. When bubbling stops, return pan to medium heat and bring to boil. Season to taste with salt, pepper and nutmeg.

For cheese sauce just add your cheeses to this.

Can you use the yeast from a yeast infection? If so, Clumsy should be able to make this easily! I'm guessing the oil is from the discharge......but it IS virgin oil so it can't be THAT bad!

Well I'll be danged!  Norwegians just call this white sauce & put it over anything too garishly colored, such as canned green beans.  *smirk*
