I'm glad not all of them died before they got old. I enjoyed it but then I'm pretty realistic. I don't expect them to look, sound or be exactly like they were 40 years ago. No one is capable of that. Reality taken into consideration I'd say they're still pretty good. I think they still merit respect for being the musicians they've been all these years. Keep rockin, guys!

I've got my sound system thumping pretty good and I've got to say I had pictures falling off the walls and plants falling over by the time it was through. They started out a little weak but they made up for it by thew time they were playing "Won't get fooled again ".

I thought they had a lot of power in that part of their performance and while their voices clearly aren't all that they were, they brought everything they still have to that show, and they still master their instruments as well as they ever did in my opinion.

I have the admittedly unkind habit of referring to many of these guitar geriatrics by one generic band name;  The Bad Investments.

I bet some of the younger crowd wondered by the cover band for the 'CSI' theme was playing in the Superbowl.

We talk about respecting age and experience in our culture, but we're full of shit. We want young and new.

I wonder if folks here will consider themselves old and washed up at the end of their careers.

The trouble with a gig like this is although people say they like new things, they are also full of shit. They want the old hits.

So we have a band more or less forced to recreate something 40 years old, and crushed into a time limit. I'd have liked to see them on a concert stage instead, mixing the expected hits with new approaches and the artistry that 40 years of mastery brings.

It bothered me to see them summarily dismissed. It's not an easy gig, and few people can do what they do and can do.

And people age. It's part of all our lives. Not the end, as many seem to believe it should be.

I thought they pulled it of with a certain grace, all things considered. I have always liked the Who. I saw them when Keith Moon was still alive...:)

I find it odd that people cheer at "DO YOU?" in Won't get Fooled Again"

That song resonates with Me right now.

What's funny is that while some older people will be dismissive of older bands these same bands have younger fans.

I talk to teenagers and twenty somethings who listen to Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.

I partially agree with you, but I do think that rock bands and their appeal can be a "dated" thing.

Back to this show, I hate all halftime entertainment at football games. So, in this case I did not watch it. I did see the Who back in the 80s, and they delivered back then.

I enjoyed it. They're a long way from Woodstock but I still like them. I've enjoyed every SB halftime show since the "ugliest nipple ever" incident.

Not quite as sad as the recent Bruce Springsteen concert (Merc actually turned that off, because we couldn't stand it), but still pretty bad.

As an avid Bruce Springsteen fan, there are NO sad Bruce concerts. Which one are you talking about, last year's half time?

I just saw him twice this year, for a 60 year old, he still rocks the house out and runs rings around younger performers.

No - And as a person who had; "Must be a 'BRUCE!' fan - and if you have to ask; "'BRUCE!' - who?" - Don't bother to contact."; in my profile back when I had one - I need to explain.

Last year's halftime was great. He sang things that didn't need critical orchestrating and he limited his high notes. It's damn difficult to sing outdoors. I have to admit - the best halftime performance I've seen was beth's favorite - Prince; when he performed in the rain a couple years ago. He was great, which I think can be attributed to his 'AR' focus on his staging details. I didn't think Bruce embarrassed himself at all last year - even doing the Chuck Berry slide into the camera.

There was a HD-TV concert of him (I forget which one) however that Wyld is referencing where the sound recording was just 'off'. As I said to Wyld at the time; "it can't be Bruce signing that bad - must be the sound recording man!" It sounded like he couldn't hear his 'feedback' speakers or something. Both the pitch and timing of his voice were off.

The problem with any of these guys or groups is that our generation hears and sees them with jaded eyes. We see them "old" and their voices showing the effects of time, among other things, and then start to lie to each other about when we first heard and/or saw them. I think the consensus of the people watching last night, was that our mother's all played 'Tommy' with headphones strapped to their abdomen while we were in the womb.

We don't like seeing and hearing them 'old' because by definition - so are we. Our mind's memory of how those Who songs sounded and how Roger Daltrey looked is also our memory of ourselves. Seeing that image and hearing the voice reflected back from a HDTV served as a mirror that few of us want to gaze.

I remember seeing Frank Sinatra in his later years; same situation. It was bitter-sweet.

The solace is - Frank, Bruce, and the WHO did a little 'cashing in' last night, while others got to appreciate how good Roger and the Who had to be to hit those notes when they first recored the CSI theme. Good for them!

You have your opinion, Merc and I have mine. I JUST saw Bruce, two days in a row and there was nothing wrong with his voice or his energy other than getting a bit older, as we all are.

If you are a true fan of someone, you may perhaps see them in rose colored lights, and that has happened to me with some other artists, just not Bruce. He never, NEVER disappoints me, and never will.

Speaking as a person with live sound reinforcement experience as well as recording studio experience, I would like to add that pulling off such a task as this was is never easy. As a matter of fact, its exceedingly difficult. It's poses enough problems doing it on a stage outdoors where there are so many variables to contend with getting levels set, monitors mixes catered for each musicians needs, equalization adjusted, delays and reverberation set properly, compressors and limiters set properly (particularly for vocal work) all the cabling and equipment set up, lights, etc, etc. But when coupled with the fact that all this must be moved onto the middle of a football field so quickly it would make most folks heads spin, well, it truly is a monumental task.

All in all, I would say they pulled it off better than I was expecting, with the exception of the big train wreck just a few bars into the set when everyone seemingly lost their place. I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Also wanted to add for anyone who may not have experience trying to sing with perfect pitch in a live performance, or in the studio for that matter, a lot of perceived pitch (to the performer) is easily affected by the monitor mix. If it is too loud, the vocalist generally will be singing consistently a bit sharp. If the monitor levels are set too low, generally the vocals are consistently flat. I'm not saying it's the cause for what some here are saying about Roger Dalton's vocal work being a bit sub-par, but I'm certainly willing to give him the benefit of doubt.

For what it's worth--musicians are also human, and have good and bad nights.

While yes, professionals strive to mitigate that variation, that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. That bad night can be followed by tomorrow's killer show.

I actually saw this once with the Cleveland Orchestra, of all things. I was excited to hear one of our top orchestras, but surprised at the so-so performance. My host in Cleveland had free tickets, so we went again the next night just for the hell of it---and they were fantastic.

Working in the business, I've seen hundreds of concerts. And some major names performing not so well. Doesn't mean they never do.
