The great thing about Larry Welk was, aside from the bubbles of course, that he was already old when he started, or seemed old anyway. You'd never have people talking about Larry in his late 60s, like The Who members, playing music he was too old to play.

I think next year they should have Tony Bennett. The guy's a living legend; about the last survivor of his day and considering that he's over 80, his voice is still amazing. And as a personal aside, I met him once and he's a really nice guy. That's my vote for next Superbowl.

We talk about respecting age and experience in our culture, but we're full of shit. We want young and new.

I wonder if folks here will consider themselves old and washed up at the end of their careers.

The trouble with a gig like this is although people say they like new things, they are also full of shit. They want the old hits.

So we have a band more or less forced to recreate something 40 years old, and crushed into a time limit. I'd have liked to see them on a concert stage instead, mixing the expected hits with new approaches and the artistry that 40 years of mastery brings.

It bothered me to see them summarily dismissed. It's not an easy gig, and few people can do what they do and can do.

And people age. It's part of all our lives. Not the end, as many seem to believe it should be.

Amen to everything you said here! What's saddest of all is to see them summarily dismissed - not by young, know-nothing whippersnappers - but by folks pretty old themselves who should have enough respect to know better. You don't like it, fine, but don't dismiss them because they aged for god's sake........luci

I'm glad not all of them died before they got old. I enjoyed it but then I'm pretty realistic. I don't expect them to look, sound or be exactly like they were 40 years ago. No one is capable of that. Reality taken into consideration I'd say they're still pretty good. I think they still merit respect for being the musicians they've been all these years. Keep rockin, guys!

so it was not lip sinked?

They often are.

And while we're addressing spelling errors, it's "lip-synched," you know as in "synchronized" a/k/a matched up

I have a little trouble with this, MM.

I don't think they were forced to do anything they knew wouldn't happen. I'm sure these guys would have had artistic control over what they did and yet still have known that 20 minutes in that setting was not their forte.

They signed up for it and no doubt got big bucks. If they didn't want to risk looking anything less than their best they could have walked away.

I reiterate that big names past their prime are totally wrong for this.

These guys were groundbreakers in the 60's and 70's. I'm not expecting them to reprove themselves.

Many evenings spent at my grandparent's sitting on the couch with them while they watched Lawrence Welk.  The bubbles were great.  I think people should find ways to incorporate bubble play into their kink.

To me, the sound is never that good when they are playing in an open air stadium like that. It was a much better show than when Michael Jackson was grabbing his crotch a number of years back.

It is all about the crotch.  Remember the close up camera shot of Bruce Springsteen's crotch?  He went sliding across the stage, and suddenly his crotch was there, in the camera.
