Clearly not.

Or it would have sounded like a DVD.

Daltrey flat out can't sing anymore. Townshend was good, but power trio chords is just about all that the set required. Pino Palladino, one of the best bass players ever (though Id rather watch Tal Wikenfeld lol) was relegated to the background (not inappropriate for a short set of course) and Zak Starkey is ok, but no Keith Moon. My first live Who...Dick Clark's Caravan of Stars, 1965 or 1966, Brooklyn Fox theater. They were quite a contrast to the Ronnettes (or was it the Shirelles?) and Herman's Hermits! I was just starting to play in my brother's band at the time and was totally pissed off that Townshend would destroy his guitar and amp every show.

I wonder if she feels that way about her job...that one day, later in her career, someone should tell her to go home with the dead where she belongs.

Pino was fabulous. Tal needs to mature past her Joco impression...:)

I like old people. I was never a fan of the Who. I got into Roger Daltry for a minute when he went solo.

Old people are cool and let them sing if they wanna.

I saw the half time performance and it did vibe a tad tired but hey it was cool they were up there rocking it out.

I was a huge Bruce fan back in the day but not so much no mo. I remember one concert in the 70's, I went with my sister.

In a quiet moment I yelled out, "I love you!"

After the concert we ran into a bunch of our friends and one of them was like, "Was that you screaming out I love you?"

Yikes tres embarrassed.

That's totally true about some younger people getting into old bands like Pink Floyd and Led Zep, the difference is that those younger people are getting into their original recordings. Yeah, I know about the brief Led Zep reunion with Bonoz's son, but what younger people are getting into are those original recordings.

~FR~

We talk about respecting age and experience in our culture, but we're full of shit. We want young and new.

I wonder if folks here will consider themselves old and washed up at the end of their careers.

The trouble with a gig like this is although people say they like new things, they are also full of shit. They want the old hits.

So we have a band more or less forced to recreate something 40 years old, and crushed into a time limit. I'd have liked to see them on a concert stage instead, mixing the expected hits with new approaches and the artistry that 40 years of mastery brings.

It bothered me to see them summarily dismissed. It's not an easy gig, and few people can do what they do and can do.

And people age. It's part of all our lives. Not the end, as many seem to believe it should be.

What's funny is that while some older people will be dismissive of older bands these same bands have younger fans.

I talk to teenagers and twenty somethings who listen to Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.

I stumbled into that halftime show during Baba O'Reilly and left during Who Are You. Apparently they closed, predictably, with WGFA. What else did they do?

I first saw The Who in August 1970, a year after Woodstock. I feel fortunate to have seen Keith Moon. I saw them again in the late 80s. I can't remember who the drummer was then, maybe Kenny Jones? Anyway, it was a tad old even then. Someone earlier posted that they saw The Who in the mid 60s, that would have been prime.

Even though I'm of that generation, I too wondered why they don't get younger acts. A lot of the answer probably rests with the demographics of who watches the Superbowl. The average age must be older.

I was sitting at home with no power or heat, listening to my little wind-up power radio for when the power company would be in my area. The Super Bowl was not on any station...just occasional updates. It's amazing how not having any power or heat for two days changes your priorities.

I saw them in there last tour before Moon died, great show but I mean they have not done anything is decades.. I guess the networks do not want any more "clothing mishaps" or however they worded it.  So better safe than sorry.

I wonder who next year will be...............I say U2...what say you

Won't be U2. Been there, done that.

Powers that be might think it time for another C & W theme. They have an uncanny knack of misreading public mood.

Apart from that, they might inject the Beach Boys with something to make them lifelike and prop them onstage. Brian will be on triple meds.

Either way, it will be safe.

The Beach Boys: God forbid! They're The Beach Great Grand Paps by now. I grew up with them, saw them when Brian Wilson returned in the 70s, but even then their best work and days were behind them. IMHO their best work was the least commercially successful anyway. The thought of Mike Love singing Fun, Fun, Fun, one more time, makes my flesh crawl.
