MzMia -> ND has jobs! Just don't come here if you don't have a place to stay! (2/8/2010 8:45:16 PM)

Hey buddy, can you spare a job?

Bismark N.D. has jobs, but Bismark also has another problem.
Many people are flocking to Bismark seeking employment, but have
nowhere to live.
This is adding and creating a big homeless problem in Bismark.

The job seekers are living in cars, and shelters, while seeking employment and trying to get on their feet.
Can you imagine trying to sleep/live in your car in N.D. in the winter?

This reminds me a bit of the Joad family, in "The Grapes of Wrath".
Is this the sort of situation, we have to look forward to?

That's pretty hardcore, Mia.  Car-camping in a North Dakota winter... At least the ones who are working can afford to run the engine.

Great point Rich, at least in the "Grapes of Wrath", they were camping in tents, and cars in CA.
N.D. is not a place I would want to be homeless, especially in the winter.

There are sleeping bags made for such weather conditions. If you need ultra light, for mountaineering, they are pretty pricey goose down. Car camping is another matter though. When weight isn't such a factor one could probably be had for $300.

I lived in my truck over 2 winters in Gunnison Colorado. Between -20 and -40 at night. I slept warm and toasty. The only problem was having to pee at 3:00 AM. There was no getting around it - the bladder always won the argument.

I'm on my way there with 42 illegal immigrants and about 18 sleeping bags. Cool ?

Just have them sleeps in shifts like the Navy does and they will be fine

I have been wondering why the Governor of the state of N.D. can't use some of
the federal stimulus money that is geared to stimulate the economy?

Why can't some of the stimulus money that the state of N.D. is getting, be used

to build temporary housing and affordable housing for those seeking and obtaining jobs?

This would certainly be a worthwhile project, and N.D. should qualify and be able to obtain stimulus money
to help fund it.

mnottertail -> RE: ND has jobs! Just don't come here if you don't have a place to stay! (2/9/2010 8:16:15 AM)

I wonder why the National Guard cant be mobilized to throw up a tent city from army supplies, we survived Korea like that.

I also think that federal stimulus money should be spent on this, because by God, it is american jobs, WHICH I THOUGHT WE WERE LOOKING FOR.

North dakota hasnt the population, and therefore tax base to pay this. And Bismark (the state capital) is not going to be a flood risk this spring.

What a wonderful post Ron.
I like the way you think.

They should be entitled to stimus money for housing, and ASAP.

God forbid private investors should see an opportunity, or homeowners who spent their "equity" on an RV drive it up there and rent the fucker out.  This is a job for Super-Stimulus Person, with a bag of freshly minted taxpayer debt!

Well if Joe Blow citizen {like us} could afford to buy or build affordable housing, and those that need shelter benefit, I see that as a win-win situation.
THAT is the American spirit of opportunity that benefits everyone.

Can you imagine that Rich?
Building affordable housing, that benefits the homeless/newly hired that seek housing, and provides a bit of a profit?
Now, how do we write up those government grants, Rich?

Why do we need that extra layer of expense and beaurocracy, Mia?  Keep that out of the equation, beyond government's usual take for permits and inspections and "variances."

Seriously.  Why would you think that getting a couple apartment complexes built, or a septic system plumbed into a patch of land for a trailer park requires federal funding?  I think we have hit that place where you and I comprehend the world around us very differently.

Actually I don't think we are at odds, Rich.
I totally GET not needing government money, for this housing project.

BUT, the stimulus money has already been granted, I can't think of many better uses for it, can you?
***Why the hell are these people that are seeking work and working sleeping in their fucking cars in N.D. in the middle of the winter, with billions of money floating around to help them?***
Projects like building affordable housing in area's especially like this, is how some of the money should be used!
Affordable housing is a BIG issue all over Rich.

Maybe you are not aware of all the people who HAVE jobs but can't afford anywhere to live, and live in shelters?

This is not a gov't issue...It is something that should be dealt with in the private sector.

We don't need the government getting into housing where the person has the ability to pay.

I understand the banks are tight but surely there has to be someone in Bismark that can recognize the possibility to turn a buck here.

Maybe there is less to the story than reported.

I doubt there are many who would take any risk right now. People with money are squeezing the shit out of it right now. Gotta squeeze every dime you can out of every nickle.

mnottertail -> RE: ND has jobs! Just don't come here if you don't have a place to stay! (2/10/2010 5:48:44 AM)

Uh, no....there will be investors and all sorta housing going up in time.

That is clay area and have you ever tried to dig frozen clay? especially that yellow shit? I dont know which clay is out there, but that yellow shit can be frozen in late june.

still alotta below zero weather out there. the jobs are now, the people are now. takes time to build and in that area they are going to need at least 3 or 4 or 5 foot frost footings for buildings there to get below the frost line so the building dont crumble, the tent city can be set up now, and the building can commence this spring after the frost is out.

well big guy- not to shock you but troops are not the answer to problems.

"posse comitatus"

before you throw eggs- may I have a kiss?

mnottertail -> RE: ND has jobs! Just don't come here if you don't have a place to stay! (2/10/2010 6:03:05 AM)

fucking posse comitatus my ass. I am not talking about substituting the us military for law enforcement (which is what the posse comitatus act is about and is only about). I am talking about using army surplus tents and stoves to house people thru the completion of the building cycle. and using the guard (big air national guard in ND cuz thats where all the nuclear missle silos were in the cold war, defending your ass...center of our country in the plains so we could ship them up in the air either way), and using troops to construct and maintain those tents, stoves, cots, lockers, and whatnots.

you can have a kiss but your point has no bearing here.

Ron

pahunkboy -> RE: ND has jobs! Just don't come here if you don't have a place to stay! (2/10/2010 6:06:28 AM)

defending my ass against the bankers who fund both sides of every war?

mnottertail -> RE: ND has jobs! Just don't come here if you don't have a place to stay! (2/10/2010 6:08:22 AM)

hey, charge reasonable rent and utilities, for all I give a fuck and make it a payback, but bridge financing and whatever can come out of stimulus, there is even some financing for shovel ready in the spring, roads infrastructure and even housing, and govt can either profit or maintain even money, I could care less, that is a very good use of our government, to help ourselves, hell aint we building housing in Iraq? aint we building housing in afganistan? aint we building housing in haiti?
