KITTYLECTRO -> Khamenei: 'punch which will stun West' (2/9/2010 5:32:37 PM)

Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Monday that Iran is set to deliver a "punch" that will stun world powers during this week's 31st anniversary of the Islamic revolution.

"The Iranian nation, with its unity and God's grace, will punch the arrogance (Western powers) on the 22nd of Bahman (February 11) in a way that will leave them stunned," Khamenei, who is also Iran's commander-in-chief, told a gathering of air force personnel.

This seems like it might be serious. Your thoughts?

I believe several governments have taken this very seriously and have either evacuated their embassies or the families of embassy personnel in fear of a reprise of the 1979 hostage situation.

Playing to the crowd most likely, his day job.

he better be meaning something like this

Thadius -> RE: Khamenei: 'punch which will stun West' (2/9/2010 5:38:19 PM)

Yep, this one seems to be a pretty credible statement. They have been ramping up various programs and tests for the last 9 months or so (missile and rocket tests). I am hoping that this punch is not going to be them testing their first nuke. If that is what happens Thursday, all bets are off and prepare for all hell to break lose over there. In my opinion Israel will no longer sit on its hands waiting for the rest of the world to do something. I fear they will reenact the job they did on Iraq.

We should run a sweepstake since he has given us a timescale.

Yesterday's friends are today's enemies. Today's friends may be tomorrow's foe. Tomorrow's friends... who knows.

I think this saying mostly applies to Facebook.

rulemylife -> RE: Khamenei: 'punch which will stun West' (2/9/2010 5:57:11 PM)

The fact he said it and not Ahmadinejad, who is prone to hyperbole, does make it seem more serious.

I have a hard time believing they would risk doing anything militarily though.

My guess is another missile test wth probably a longer range than they have been capable of before.

The scary part is: that is what I am hoping they are up to. The alternative is...

But it would be too late for that. There's a world of difference between attacking a country that's still in the process of developing nuclear weapons, and attacking a country that's already got them. I fear the toothpaste is already out of the tube.

They had better have more than one bomb...or there is a good chance some parts of Iran will be dust.

Of the countries that have nuclear weapons, only the US and UK have a "no first use" philosophy. Israel has made it clear they will not hesitate to use nuclear weapons if threatened.

MrMister -> RE: Khamenei: 'punch which will stun West' (2/9/2010 7:39:48 PM)

It is always something to be very concerned about, especially considering the stories out there that the religious "Twelver" sect (which President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's seems to hold in high esteem) believes they can hasten the return of the 12th Imam known as the Mahdi.

From one of the linked articles:

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's Shi'ite creed has convinced him lesser mortals can not only influence but also hasten the awaited return of the 12th Imam, known as the Mahdi. Iran's dominant "Twelver" sect holds that this will be Muhammad ibn Hasan, the righteous descendant of the Prophet Muhammad. He is said to have gone into "occlusion" in the 9th century, at age 5. His return will be preceded by cosmic chaos, war, bloodshed and pestilence. After this cataclysmic confrontation between the forces of good and evil, the Mahdi will lead the world to an era of universal peace.

Whether it's a weapons test, a military/satellite strike, or a dramatic change in the way Iran and its allies manage the trading of oil, I imagine nothing good is going to come from any of this.

Thursday for Iran is about 15 hours from now.

What a great opportunity for Obama to turn around his Administration. It's the perfect opportunity for Obama to go over to Iran and talk with both Khamenei and Ahmadinejad as he promised he would do with our enemies during his campaign.

Or was that representation more hollow rhetoric like closing GITMO in a year?

pahunkboy -> RE: Khamenei: 'punch which will stun West' (2/10/2010 6:49:29 AM)

if I had to guess they plan on an EMP attack.

if I had to further guess- we will strike first.

BTW- if there is an EMP attack- there is no electric, no internet- no cell, most newer cars wont work- etc.

My neighbor says it is all in gods hands.
..which is one way to look at it.

Although I rarely assume much, I will choose to assume you mean this sarcastically. [8|]

(My sarcasm says I hope Israel has their nukes pointed right at Iran right about now!)  [;)]

Which would be shortly followed by no food in the grocery store, mass riots, civil unrest, and crime followed by a period of martial law, no matter where it occurs (well, in any non-already 3rd world country). Why exactly would we attack first ? The current administration doesn't give a rat fuck about anything other than their own power (which would be enhanced by any crisis). I don't think they'd do a damn thing pre-emptively to save this country much less Israel.
