name something that's illegal that should be legalized.

The French. Currently illegal in England......but with a recession going on/hard times we could do with some drama and wild gesticulation....just for a few days or so....and then ban them again.

I refuse to let this post go by unnoticed. Well played, sir. Well played!

Where are our rights in all of this? how can you make smoking illegal in bars when smoking is legal? So many laws for things that adults should be able to do.

Why is it illegal, because second hand smoke can when inhaled for a long period of time can KILL other peopl

And I personally like to go to a bar.. and not die from inhaling someone elses smoke.. You want to smoke just fine dont involve OTHERS in your choices non consensually.

Besides we have a few bars locally that do allow smoking for a fee every month.

Personally, I like to leave it up to businesses to determine what they want to do with their establishments. Let the consumer dollars decide who gets more business - those who allow smoking or those that don't.

Banning smoking in bars and restaurants was a genius move. I completely agree with it.

Then again, I gave up smoking altogether six months ago, and I frankly don't give a shit about smokers' rights :-) . Fuck 'em and their pestilence.

Yeah... I've never been much of a smoker but I value other people's rights more than that. It's not hard to not step into a bar. I don't need to be in one to survive. If they allow something I don't like, I just don't go.

*Shrug* :-) . I don't give enough of a shit to care. I'm more worried about other things that infringe on individual rights than the ban of a noxious substance that affects us all. "Chacun son cheval de bataille. "

If it's noxious substances people are concerned about, there are about a hundred other to go after - including car exhaust. The banning of smoking outside is fine with me. But a bar or resturant is incredibly easy to avoid. Just make the adult and informed decision to not step in.

I can't choose not inhale pollution and car exhaust. I can choose not to go clubbing.

I care about a lot of things which you probably don't give a flying duck's fuck about. Diversity is part of life's rich tapestry.

Sure, why not. After someone commits suicide, what's the point in saying it was illegal. They are dead, they don't care anymore.

It's possible. I wouldn't go so far as to say I don't give a flying duck's fuck about something. Even when something doesn't matter to me personally, I try to see the other point of view and how it matters to someone else. Sometimes I can't but I do make the effort.

ETA - Diversity is actually one of the reasons we disagree so much. I would prefer options in terms of bars and the like that reflect the owners and their customers instead of having one way forced on them.

They did in our area and of the 5 bars that allow smoking only 2 are still running and ones about to go under, to many people prefer the smoke free atmosphere.

That's cool. Sucks for the businesses that are going under but hey... they shoulda changed their business model to reflect the desires of the customers.

From a personal standpoint, that's awesome to hear about. I'm not a huge fan of going to clubs and bars and inhaling smoke all the time. I just don't favor making it a legal requirement.

All victimless crimes should be abolished.
Prostitution
Gambling
Drugs
Homosexuality
Suicide

While I think it's really stupid to call suicide illegal, since the person is dead. I really don't see how you can call it a victimless crime.

Oh, trust me, I've seen the other side of the smokers' right thing. I was a smoker for years. I enjoyed clubs and bars and restaurants that allowed smoking, but whenever I was in one that restricted the use of tobacco, I'd just put up with it.

I no longer give a fuck about smoking rights because I think the rights of people not to breathe in shit prevails over that of those that wish to blow the shit into the air. I have three stepchildren whose mother and her boyfriend chose to smoke in their home, in their car, everywhere around them, giving them asthma, allergies, making them, their clothes, and hair, stink to high heavens, and it made me realise how selfish smokers are. It took court action to make them stop the stench.

You'll just have to allow me to have my opinion without prejudging why I hold it - frankly, I think there are things far more important than "smokers' rights". Each to their own.

Did I ever say smoker's rights?

I'm more concerned with the rights of businesses to create and enforce their own policies regarding their customer's behaviors.
