They had no flavor with cheese and butter added? Do you happen to know what kind of grits they were? Homemade or instant? And, if instant, what sort? The minute grits are truly disgusting but the ones that take longer to cook are much, much, much better.

No idea, one of the guys in student halls used to make them before we went for a run in the mornings. I think it was some kind of cunning ploy to weaken me. He made them in the microwave so I'm guessing instant.

Oh, and I'm totally serious about sending you all the creme eggs I get for Easter this year, they make me fat and disgusting.

Ew. Mircowave grits need to die as they are a shame to our Southern traditions. Grits can be wonderful... and they can be horrid.

It must be an american idea to use one of the most exotic and versatile spices as a term for something boring. I love doing cooking and baking and vanilla is an ingredient i have in all it's forms in my kitchen as it goes in to a host of baking and dessert recepies. Why don't they call it for McDonald sex in stead of. That must surely be the most tasteless and boring food ever conceived.

Vanilla is straightforward jiggy jiggy with nothing added and nothing taken away. Therefore people who are vanilla think of jiggy jiggy and nothing else.

This is why jiggy jiggy can also be rumpy rumpy or even wubba-dub wubba-dub, the variation is in the name alone, not in the activity.

Hawkwindblues -> RE: what does vanilla mean? (2/11/2010 10:46:31 PM)

Actually i love vanilla icecream, as plain as possible.
And i have a vanilla bath by Yves Rocher, that i also adore.

Vanilla perfum i had and was not very impressed by it.

dreamerdreaming -> RE: what does vanilla mean? (2/12/2010 12:02:13 AM)

Vanilla is everything that is not to do with BDSM. In other words: its "normal" sex, and a "normal" lifestyle. A "normal" way of thinking, that doesn't involve D/s, kink, etc.
A lot of times we here can seem to be looking down on 'nillas, or it can come off as a disparaging term. But I don't think most of us really mean it that way.

I do think that just as 'nillas for the most part just really, on a very deep, basic level don't understand about us and WIITWD, that maybe a good number of us have the same kind of very deep, basic lack of understanding or appreciation of what it means to be strictly vanilla.

Fish looks up through the water
And what does he see?
Bird flying in the sky above,
Bird flying in the sky above.
Fish might think he understands
What it feels like to be
Bird flying in the sky above.
Bird flying in the sky above.

Bird looks down from high above
And what does he see?
Fish swimming in the sea below,
Fish swimming in the sea below
Bird might think he understands
What it feels like to be
Fish swimming in the sea below,
Fish swimming in the sea below

Well, Bird above,
Well, Fish below,
They think they know,
They think they know,
Try telling either one of them
That they don't understand-
They think they know,
they think they know...

A lot of times we may not be able to communicate adequately to one another what it really feels like to be us, precisely because in spite of all our similarities, we are so different.

I believe the word vanilla was originally used to mean something plain, and derived from those ice cream shops that sold masses of different flavours. Vanilla was the 'basic' variety, everything else was more exotic.

Also when you mix vanilla with almost any other flavor it goes well together... or you can make vanilla into a scrumptious sundae, or put little sprinkles on top... vanilla is versatile[;)]

MMMMmmmm... I love caramel! ^^

I'm all for the Blending of Vanilla and BDSM because that's realistic. It's okay you don't have to be BDSM 24/7...

Oh, but I do want it ;)

It's anything that people feel doesn't fit into kink. I actually don't think there is anything that is truly pure vanilla. I'm personally fond of French vanilla ;-)

I can't seem to be satisified with just vanilla, next thing I know I'm adding coconut for added flavor and fregence, and spiking it with Rum. Talk about a kicking morning cup of coffee. (jk)

AlfredBravo -> RE: what does vanilla mean? (2/22/2010 7:55:43 AM)

It means that it is a flavour of Ice  Cream.

xssve -> RE: what does vanilla mean? (2/24/2010 8:19:56 AM)

It's essentially the same meaning as "square" which also covers the less pejorative sense, basically, unimaginative, routine; it just tends to connote more closely with sexuality.

In a more political sense, it connotes with "Whiteness", and "purity", again, as a pejorative, this may connote a rigid, anally retentive personality type, overly obsessed with "purity".

Colloquially, as a couple of posters have demonstrated, it often merely describes the difference between going to a PTA meeting or a munch - you probably won't wear your leathers to the former.

xssve -> RE: what does vanilla mean? (2/24/2010 8:37:38 AM)

In culinary terms, Vanilla is sort of like a universal mixer, it tends to blend well with, and enhance other flavors - sort of like the confectionery equivalent of MSG.

And face, it if there was no "norm", it might be a lot less fun rebelling against it - not saying that's the motive of everybody engaged in BDSM, or even the primary motive, but it often does eventually factor in there somewhere, otherwise, there would be no word for it.

And all in all, "Vanilla" is much less pejorative that "square" or "Sheeple" for example, which mean roughly the same thing.

The culinary metaphor that first sprang to my mind was not Vanilla, but unadorned oatmeal, which like grits are not bad alone (they taste like corn to me), but seldom suffer from the addition of a little butter, salt, cream, sugar, etc., i.e., it's just the basics, and the truth is, it would be hard to sustain metabolism if you only ate the condiments - a slab of sweet butter always tastes better melted into a nice bowl of steaming oatmeal.

I believe however, much like Domiguy did in his own inimitable way, that I have probably strained the limits of the metaphor to the breaking point with that last.

Now I'm just hungry.
