it can be used as an adjective, to describe the conventional, non-exotic version of whatever you are using the adjective to describe.
for example:

Vanilla is my sweet husband who doesn't understand why I want to be bitten, smacked and thrown around...and doesn't have any interest in it. The opposite of that is kinky, which is the kind of sex I had with Master back in the day.

I could write a book, NO perhaps a fifty volume encyclopedia on vanilla. I have dated many vanilla women and even married one. Here are the basics:

1) NO BDSM
2) NO FETISHES
3) NOTHING THAT WOULD EVEN BE CLOSELY LINKED TO THE ABOVE(black underwear, black leather)

Such people should be avoided at all costs!!!!!

I agree. I just had jam with bourbon vanilla. Vanilla sex however bores the hell out of me!
