After years of medicating various animals in my life.........cats........I second the idea of wrapping them in a towel or small rug. Less stress for all parties concerned.

As many that have already posted, I can get a pill down my harbour seal, ahem, CAT'S.................., throat before he knows what I have in mind. But that takes A LOT of practice. The wrapping process is much easier.

Of course theyre not human - this is where their attraction lies, not only in that humans can be difficult to get along with but also in that building a relationship with another being of another species is so rewarding, especially with cats who truly do decide whether they want such a relationship, unlike dogs who have a more social nature to build on.

The thing with cats is, you never own a cat. The cat agrees to share accomodation with you and thats it. If the cat finds somewhere better then off it will go, and likewise if you or your accomodation prove not to the cat's liking. And contrary to what many think, cats have individual personalities such that what suits one cat may not suit another.

Its natural to project human character onto cats as well; its our language that we understand to define who is who amongst humans and we will do the same with cats. I can tell you how my cats' personalities vary but I'd have to use human references to do so.

And by that mechanism we also come to love our cats as if they were little humans and from that we want to make sure theyre not only happy but also healthy - it may be argued that as they are individualistic animals we have no right to administer medication, but this is simply and readily outweighed by our love for them not to mention that if they lived in nature rather than with us, then they'd most likely be dead by age 3 - something which makes us responsible for them.

"don't get a pet"

Agreed Mm. I have way too much respect for animals to cage them up in a human society for which they are not intended.

Now we have to give them our drugs, something proven not to work effectively on us ? They need checkups ?

And even so, if I were to capitulate, we are talking about an antihistamine here. Dammit, cats are the the cause of the need for antihistamines, not the recipients !

This is why I like dogs. You want them eat something...drop it on the floor. Our dogs always went with the theory - if it falls on the floor eat it, if it's bad, you can always throw it up later.

When I was growing up, we had a dog. Later on in her life we had to give her a pill, I don't remember what for. We were under the impression that she was being such a good girl, taking them without a fuss but a few years after having to have her put down, we moved the carpet and found about 30 pills. Turns out that she was spitting them out and hiding them under the carpet.

I have every right.

And as long as it serves the critter's well-being, I'll continue to do so when necessary.

Watching it suffer may serve some warped self-righteous arbitrary agenda, but it's not for those under my care.

By the way, don't get a pet.

Damn right Tim. Not only is it my right, it's my responsibility, they can *not* care for themselves, and when assuming pet ownership you don't just end it at feeding them. Vet's visits, proper food, shelter, love, treats, toys, kisses, snuggles, lavender aromatherapy pillows, their own bed, etc....yes I have no children, and? . Oh and crabmeat on Sunday for kitty brunch.

Oh for spay and neuter!!!!! Can't emphasize that one enough.

Sorry Op, ok I have 3 cats, and it may not sound too sweet, but I take the pill, dab either butter or fish oil on it, grab little beastie by the scruff in one fell swoop, quickly pry open mouth, fast, shove in pill, close mouth, massage neck til they swallow, and 5 seconds later, they have their faces buried in crabmeat and it's all forgotten.  I find that is way easier than trying to "hide" it in their food, cats aren't stupid, and if you give them a treat instantly afterwards, it's better.

For dogs, stick it in anything edible. , my two labs would eat roofing nails if I stuck it them in a piece of ham.

No kidding! We really had to laugh even though it obviously wasn't funny that she hadn't been getting her medicine. We thought we were being sneaky hiding the pills in her food.....guess not.

Get some moist cat food, just a small amount will do, and mix the liquid medicine into the cat food. Smear the cat food onto their paw, embed it into their fur. Cats HATE stuff on their paws and will instinctually lick it off. However, if the cat food/medicine mix is not embedded into the fur well, they will just shake it off.

Works like a charm.

My cat is not caged. He is domesticated.

His food is selected with his age and nutritional needs in mind. He is the perfect image of health at 13 with the softest, shiniest coat and still runs after toys. He gets lots of love and affection and is a very happy cat. He doesn't know what getting his ear ripped off in a alley fight means. Nope. He is just spoiled and any moment he can, he comes to me purring and head butting me, looking for love.

I can be a cruel bitch, but not to this little dude! ;-)

I don't know how to break this to y'all, and I like cats.

1. Forget the vet.
2. Open door, cat needs fresh air not a fucking pill.
3. Feed cat occasionally.
4. Pet cat occasionally.
5. If lonely for cat, open can tuna.

Animals are not human. Lubs dem all you want, but they simply do not need all this shit. You have no right to medicate an animal.

That is my opinion.

I knew a horse that was allergic to dust. We collected old pantyhose and used them as dust masks anytime he was out in the arenas.

My dog ran into something on the ice and broke a toe, he's wearing a cast.
He received pain pills for two weeks.
If he gets anything in the cast and gets a festering sore, he'll get antibiotics for it.

He's been vaccinated for canine influenza. Come April he'll get his rabies vaccine and Lyme's and whatever else he needs.

The horse gets wormed, and dental cleaning. As well as vaccines for rabies, Lyme's, infectious equine anemia, West Nile, and a hell of a lot of others.
Since the Lyme's vaccine isn't foolproof, if he gets it he'll get intravenous antibiotics.

They get the same diseases we do and more. Most human meds were tried first on animals so we know how to treat an animal. I've known insulin dependent dogs who received three shots a day. I've known cats with cancer who had a leg amputated who got along fine for several more years.

No way am I going to allow an animal to suffer needlessly nor deprive it of several good years.

Ok, the Vet Tech. told me to do this.

1. Put the medicine in the dropper
2. take the cat and put her on a surface like your sink area.
3. take your hand (If left handed use the left hand) put it behind the cats head
4. take your forefinger and middle finger and bend the fingers
5. place over the cats head and use them to open up the top part of it's mouth
6. place dropper into the side of the mouth or gently slide it in the side of the cats closed mouth, squeeze liquid into cats mouth
7, gently close the cats upper and lower jaw with your hand, not obstructing the nose and with your other free hand gently caress her chin and throat area
8. wait for the cat to swallow, you have given your cat the medicine
9. for my cat there was some banana flavored medicine that he liked so rather than put him through this i tried putting it on a china plate.
10. he lapped it all up, he liked it
11. after the cat takes the medicine by swallowing it praise it and give it a treat if this doesn't interfere with the medicine. Some meds say give on empty stomach or after eating.

TRUST ME DROPPER IS THE EASIEST WAY TO GO!

Pills
Pills are hard to give a cat at least for mine. I have tried pill pockets. You put the pill inside of this pill pocket treat and hide it by putting the soft treat around the pill
my girl cat figured it out and would eat the treat and not the pill! the little stinker! :)
For me liquid is easier than a pill.

1. open the cats mouth (see above for how to open the cats mouth)
2. get the pill linto the back of it's mouth
3. gently close the mouth shut
4. gently hold mouth shut and gently stroke the chin/throat area
5. cat swallows hopefully the pill went in

I have tried a towel (mine escape) and have yet to try a sweatshirt. This i was told you put the cats head through the sleeve and it makes it easier to manage the cat.

Too bad they don't make the liquid tuna flavored instead of cherry or banana. My boy cat loves the liquid my girl cat doesn't so you are seeing two different comments on success..

Oh, I just learned this from my friend that has a dog. She puts the pill into some cream cheese and puts it into it's bowl. He loves the stuff!

Just in case anybody needs a tip on how to get a pill into their dog...

Actually that is precisely what dogs and cats are intended for. Dogs and cats do not exist in the wild naturally. We created them for our own purposes.

When I give Bubba hairball meds I just squeeze it out of the tube onto one of his paws and he licks it off.

Seconding cream cheese for dogs. They'll eat around it if in their food but wrapped in cream cheese it gets swallowed immediately.

And for horses, we also don't stick it in their food. Many of them won't eat for several days after someone tries this.

Agreed. The big syringes are faaaaabulous!

As for giving shots.......of all the animals I have had to stick a needle in.......a cranky female cat was the worst.

"We created them for our own purposes. "

Who is we ? I didn't do it.

That's all fine and good, but I simply do not participate. There is maybe one way I would have an animal, if I had a farm. A dog to herd the cows or something. Feed it, it does you a few favors, cool. But I am a city dweller, so I think it is wrong, especially for me, to keep animals.

No wonder some of these animals are all stressed out. I have to give various forms of medicine to all of my three cats. It takes mere seconds for me to do this.

Once you have the cat, you have to get down on the floor with them also. Put them between your knees, closing your feet behind you so they can't back out.

Your body should be firmly against their body...then just lift their head up high in the air with your hand, and depending on what you are using, you should be able to pry open the jaw easily or put the dropper in easily. All this should be able to be done in 10 seconds or less.
