If i recall you need a candy thermometer because it has to reach a certain temperature then you have to beat it forever to get a very shiny look to it.

I made it one time and i thought my arms would fall off...

Seriously it is easier to buy! LOL

Put it as suggested over vanilla ice cream or maybe incorporate it in your play? Grins

I'm pretty positive it was from temperature not being high enough.  Nothing wrong with using it as chocolate sauce on stuff now though. :)  But, spend the $5-10 and get a candy thermometer, or nice digital thermometer that will reach those temperatures.  It's well worth it.  Candy is very very particular about such things.  Loosely translated, candy is a total BITCH to work with. LOL

I make this every Christmas and people rave over it. I've made all different kinds of flavors, and they have all turned out wonderfully! My kids and the HM ask for this quite often!

Peanut Butter Fudge

Butter
Peanut Butter
Powdered Sugar

Melt butter in pot, add PB, add sugar. Mix well as butter melts. Pour in a pan, or not, and toss in fridge.

Candy making is not something where you can just guess about stuff and get it right.

Cooking syrup to a particular temperature achieves several goals. First it boils out a certain percentage of the water, the hotter the syrup gets the less water is still in it. Second it breaks down the sucrose into its component simple sugars. That affects flavor and crystalization.

Using the dropping sugar into water thing can work but I much prefer putting a squeaky clean candy thermometer right into the syrup. Good ones can be set to beep when a particular temp is reached.

The two things you absolutely must not do when making candy is use anything that isn't super clean or stir the syrup once the sugar is fully dissolved. A little dust or a spoon stirring the syrup can cause crystals to form and completely ruin whatever you're trying to make.

BTW just to state the obvious syrups cooked for candy making are well over 200 degrees when they come off the stove and are unbelieveably sticky so extreme care should be taken in handling the stuff.

you did not get it hot enough.

Unless you really get it hot, it won't get as hard as us girls like it and i am going to take a cold shower now....
