I see no reason to consider your behaviour ethical. From my point of view you simply undermine their self-esteem by treating them as an after-thought rather than as vulnerable and valuable human beings. Easier to deal with their emotions by phone than in person, and of course, since this is casual, they can expect nothing from you in the emotional department ... simply more evidence that you erode their self-esteem and let them know you really don't care what they feel.
