I had no idea the English were so violent. Are you sure you're not confusing the Brits with the Irish?

Yes.....we English are extremely violent.....which is why we have one of the lowest murder rates in the world........far lower than Scotland/Germany/US/France/Italy etc etc....and just lower than Japan.

you are kidding right??? [:D]

Not sure where your statistic is coming from and not entirely sure which source is the most appropriate, nor do I have the time now to have a deeper look into it, but one source which did pop up confirms my view, which is that the UK is far worse in crime then Germany and that also includes in regards to murder.

at least this statistic here confirms so, but am open to be proven wrong (statistically...personally I would stay in disbelief that the UK should be "safer" then Germany as personally...that's not the case)

http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_mur-crime-murders

The UK rate will be pushed up by Scotland which has a rate something like 8 times that of England.........

Just out of interest.....how many times have you been attacked since you've been in England?

Quite frankly I see enough what is going on down here so I am not bothered to look up to the scots...never been there and have no interest to ever go there...its bad enough what is happening over here.

Me attacked over here in five years?

I was mugged once and had to deal with a few thieves who tried to enter my bag in public as well as an intruder who tried to sneak into my room in a house share (whilst we had builders doing some work) who then was shocked that I was in there and took a fast run...

Now, how often did this happen in my 27 years at home...well...never...quite frankly.

And was the police bothered when I reported the mugger to him, nope, they weren't.

Apart from that I know plenty people who got mugged over here where again I don't know anyone back home who this happened to (it does happen, of course, but I don't know anyone whom it did happen to).

I worked in 1997-1999 as a secretary at a police department in a bigger city where we had about 2 murders a year...back home I am not used to read much about stabbings, and certainly not on a level how it was to read here from 2007-2009.

So you can defend how peaceful it is over here as much as you like...but I do know why I say for certain that once I leave this place I make sure to never come back [:)]

No wonder its so bad. The lot of ya all gave up. Including the police.

Sad you are letting THEM win.

The only way to start to resolve this mess is to change the laws on how, when and where alcohol is sold, but thereafter we have to get busy with changing our socio-economic model to one in which young people can have goals they can realistically achieve in terms of building a life and becoming a stakeholder in society such that they accept the need to behave properly.

Or you can just move here where everything is so peachy keen and wunnerful![sm=hippie.gif]

I can only chime in with the Lady Ellen/Aneirin/Phoenixpower consensus regarding this country.

It's a bit different for me, as I live in London, in fact very close to the centre but it's a similar set up. I live in a triangle bordered by Battersea Park, Stockwell and Vauxhall and at weekends we get the 'okay yah' and Bridget Jones/Hugh Grant professional clones coming up from the better districts further out like Putney, Richmond, Mortlake and such.

They have local pubs in their areas but there's a difference between their pubs and our pubs here locally - there you can just buy alcohol, but here you can step out of the pub, stop one of the hoodies on a mountain bike (and they're like buses or taxis) and buy drugs.

It's generally the same I guess, to (1) get off your face (2) get out of your head and get involved in sex, violence, or whatever. Throw in a party, a DJ with some really cheesy music, some tuneless singing, whooping, arguing and 'giving it the large' and you have what a lot of young people today regard as 'fun'.

I'm British, born in the North of England, grew up in Glasgow, I spent a dozen years or so in Eastern Europe and even after coming back three years ago I cannot get used to what England has become. I feel not much different from the Polish migrant workers who arrived with me and feel I have a lot more in common with foreign or European migrant workers.

I've travelled out of London on a number of occasions to towns which have been transformed around shopping centres and Toytown style High Streets with chain stores which are similar in some respect to the High Street/High Road shops found in London, but without the ethnicity, the shops selling 'Pasta Pizza Burgers', or 'Chicken Burger Pasta' or 'Chicken Pizza Burgers' and the metropolitan village mentality specific to London.

But you get the same animosity, rudeness, anger, aggression, the same pasty faced chavs and chavettes, the same teenagers who speak and communicate in English in exactly the same way (and with the same amount of errors) as Level 2 intermediate foreign students of English, the same ignorance, the same apathy, and the same glaring lack of a sense of personal responsibility.

However you would be mistaken to think that this is all of society - it isn't. Society is made up of people, and 'people' is made up of individuals. What I have described above are some of those who make up society. There appears to be a greater number of Brits, most older, who are pissed off with this, but who - for some reasons or logic which escapes me - appear to be putting up with it.

There's an even greater majority of Brits who haven't changed much, they're decent, friendly, openminded types, they're still around, living their lives, and I would wager that this state of affairs has become such in this country because we are so openminded and tolerant as a society, it's now becoming such to our detriment, we realize this but we lack the unity and social cohesion to do anything about it en masse.

However it's been fuelled more by the Internet, the media, development of mobile phones, by celebrity culture and having role models as Pete Doherty and Amy Whinehouse - musicians that would be musicians if they could just lay off the drugs and stay out of court long enough to come up with a decent album. Indeed we've come a long way since the Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band and artists such as The Who, Hendrix, Bob Marley etc who could take a shit load of drugs and still come out consistently with brilliant music.

There's a lot of people out there I guess who've created so many personas, online, real time, whatever that they've lost sense of who they really are or who are ashamed of who they are or are angry with what their lives have become. Wouldn't be so bad if not for the unrealistic expectations they have inspired by the media, reality TV et al.

My take on it is that the chickens are coming home to roost after Thatcherism and Blairism. Britain isn't getting it on a plate any more, which is hard for many here to accept, and we can't continue living in the past on our delusions of grandeur and pop celebrity culture. It's time to wake up, smell the coffee, regain that sense of personal responsibility and roll up one's sleeves and start grafting like the rest of Europe.

The changes are coming, and there's going to come a day when the disaffected majority are going to come together and say 'Fuck this. Enough is enough.'

Thanks but I do value "life" and even more the "quality of life" and don't waste it down the drain over here. There will be enough others left to spend there life wasting a fortune on ridicoulus council tax on bad health care and such a quality of society.

Back home I used to read two newspapers every day (as my grandparents had a different one daily then the one my parents had) and ordered my daily paper when I moved out and enjoyed reading it 6 days a week....as it was a lot about what is going on in the community...including many good aspects of community where community got together for festivals, sports championships and whatever...

Over here I don't bother about reading the newspaper as it is filled with crime anyway.
It's enough to see it in the news, no need to waste money to read it in papers again.
Community get togethers are far less happening over here than it is where I am from.

LadyEllen -> RE: What a shitt society we live in (2/20/2010 11:42:28 AM)

Its a long time since I had a night out in Germany PP - but not so long since I had a night out in Brugge (Belgium for the geographically compromised). Just as busy as an English town centre, lots of people and lots of venues - presumably even by the end of the evening lots of drunk people.

Absolutely no trouble. No fighting, no posturing, no shouting and screaming, no one falling over, wetting themselves or throwing up. Mind you, the absence of chavs and chavettes was pretty noticeable too.

That's all well and good Phoenix and good luck to you.....hope you get what you need when you get back to Germany.

Phoenixpower -> RE: What a shitt society we live in (2/20/2010 11:57:05 AM)

Thanks NG but I am not going back to Germany as at home is no work available for my current studies...so whilst personally I would love to go back home, work wise is no point to go back home...my future will be NZ or Canada or...*hugesigh* america...(not my desire on a personal level....however the guy might be worth it to consider it to move to him)...so going back home is not gonna happen in the near future...

and yes Ellen, back home as well it is less going on at night times I do feel safer on the streets at night back home. That being said I am not from the major cities from home, so there it might be different and my current date got shot in Berlin many years ago...nevertheless, overall it is IMO less violent there and another issue IMO over here is how filled the soaps are over here with cheating, mugging, killing and whatsoever...whilst this might reflect the society.....it also already "teaches" kids at home how it would be "normal" to behave when they are left on their own too much and watch that crap far to regular...back home I had 3 regular soaps I watched...and quite frankly there the topics arent as much based on bad behaviour and violence as soaps are over here.

There must be work in Berlin or somewhere? It's a big country....80 million of you....there must be something on offer?

The safest place on earth is the place with the fewest people. Well apart from the north and south poles, you don't want to die of exposure or get eaten by a polar bear on an asbo.

NG...there is a major difference in how you qualify to work for a job...

I know that over here people swap between jobs like changing their socks, one day working at the post office, then at the bank and the next day in a nursing home...well...thats not the case back home...for almost every job you need a 2-4 year qualification in Germany.

I did a 4 year qualification to work with challenging kids in childrens homes...and loved it...in 2003 we did the exams and were confident that we always find easily work...well, that changed soon later as in 2004 80% of our course was unemployed as work in the social sector collapsed...

which was the reason why I went back to the UK.

Over here it is considered that staff does not need a qualification to work in residential homes and to work in nursing homes...and coming from a country where you do a lot to gain a holistic understanding about the work you are doing you are appalled to see how it is done over here (at least from the majority from the staff).

In 2007, before I started my studies, I applied back home in my workforce and could only find 10 vacancies on the german jobcentre online, for my job...thats why I decided to do my studies as I have no interest to work in my job on such a low level as it is over here and as there was no point to go back home either...since then it still did not change much...and the fact that we have a very low birthrate at home shows it won't change much in the near future either...

My studied job is since far longer difficult to find work in back home, as that job already has difficulties since 10 years or so to provide enough work for qualified staff...

So whilst I am about to have 3 proper qualifications (one lasted 2, one 4 and my studies 3 years) it does not help me back home as two of them are in the social sector and the first one is a lil bit lower paid then the other two (not much, but what is the point to apply for that when I have build up a huge amount of student debts over here).

IF I would dislike my future country as much as living in the UK, then at a later stage I would go back home...but first of all, there still are other countries to go to and I am still young enough to relocate and so is no point to go back home now.

So our system to find work is simply very different, you are bound to your job you are qualified for and if you want to work in another sector you have to do again a 2-4 year qualification where you earn very little. And as older you get as less likely they would take you as it is not common to learn a new job in Germany once you are 25+ as that is for the guys and girls who leave school aged 16-19.

Therefore I can't just do anything...of course I could work at Mc Donalds or clean offices...but quite frankly I don't feel the need to do that after 9 years of qualification for different jobs...but any other jobs (at Banks or shops or whatever...you need to do again the lengthy qualification to get into it).

I'm sorry that this happened to you Aneirin, I've always thought you were a welcome addition to this forum and I"ve enjoyed reading your posts and participating in your threads.
It is sad that the world isn't what we think it is at times and it's unfortunate that your experience has triggered some past troubles. I hope you recover your goodwill towards others in time, I've always thought it to be a large part of your nature and you just wouldn't be the same without it [:)]
