violent crime is going down in Chicago. It has followed this trend, I believe, since the mid to late sixties. You would think by the reports of the news agencies that it was getting worse.

Some things are actually getting better even though we like to focus on the belief that they are not.

I doubt that.   Many don't bother to report crime.  Which years was Chicago the murder capital?   Alot were shot this year.

UK had cams and alot of homeland security- it should be safer there then at Disneyland.

You know, it is all in how you want to view the world... He says official crime stats show a decrease, and you say that is because people stopped reporting. You have no proof of that, yet you state it like it is fact, so in your reality it is true.... I mean if you had a way to test your conclusion I would say "kewl beans", but since you are just going to state it like it is fact that is very sad way to live one's life!

When I am for work in the UK...going out is the same every where.
Most people behave...the select few not.
I don't see more drunks in the Uk then for instance in Romania or Italy.

Holidays ...seem different though. Some people ( not just Brits) can't behave themselfs.

Curious about Russia though..lol

Some of this is what is culturally acceptable. For example - in Berlin - people walk round the streets during the day drinking beer. Now that would be seriously frowned upon in England and I suppose we could say that in Germany things are that bad that they can't get down the street without necking a beer.....but then.....well...

This country is far too socially conservative for its own good. Take football hooligans.....by and large it's a few blokes throwing a few punches with most of 'em missing by a mile. But our government go ape and clamour for England to be kicked out of football tournaments. Whereas in Italy there are stabbings and all sorts at football matches and no one seems to want to put English behaviour in some sort of perspective. A show of anti-social behaviour in this country and the politicians/media/public alike think it's armageddon. And really it's a kind of snobbery - the perception or desire being that the English don't do that sort of thing which is why there's such outrage at behaviour which is really much ado about nothing - and why the English press sensationalise crime and alcohol-fuelled casual violence.

Oh and you can find decent ale in pubs in towns and cities. Not all pubs serve bath water or cat's piss, you can find pubs selling really good beers, you just have to hunt them down and find them.

there are loads of them at the beer festival in august at earls court [:)]

good points.
Culture is part of it.

btw
If you read the newspapers..fights happen also on house parties..it is not just football...it happens everywhere were people gather.
Football violence has reduced a lott since the 90's

Do you know what the trouble is when people quote statistics, each one of those increments on whatever scale, is a person, a living breathing human being that has had wrong done to them, with statistics those people are reduced to just numbers in a collection of numbers. Does anyone ever consider when viewing statistics about crime that everything there is not a number, it's a life gone through whatever nasty occurences to be reported and make it onto a sheet of numbers, if people started thinking more about people other than numbers maybe something effective might actually be done about it, so people aren't reduced to an increment on a graph for non helping people to pore over and compare against other collections of numbers.

In the UK many crimes are not reported, as invariably nothing is ever done about the problem, so why bother, why help the pencil necks create sheets of numbers, they do not help as once something becomes a number, the damage is already done.

I used to support the police, I nearly became one, but now having received their service or should I say lack of it and plain unsatisfactory, I now despise them and think of them as politician's playthings for they focus their efforts of whatever governmental flavour of the month crime is and there ignore the rest unless it brings kudos for them, it looks good on their reports to their masters and the gullible public.

-many of those people should know they end in the list of numbers when they do wrong.
-many repeat themselfs even when they get help
-numbers help to analyze problems...find the biggest problem...so you can solve it.
-yes the are people...sadly they attact people...meaning they have punishment..and there for gave away some of their rights

Aneirin -> RE: What a shitt society we live in (2/21/2010 11:04:00 PM)

I was talking about victims of crimes, as that is why crimes come to be in statistics, some are reported voluntarily and others are so serious the police automaticaly become involved. Regards the perpetrators of criminal actions against others, I couldn't give a flying fuck about them they chose to harm others.

Justme696 -> RE: What a shitt society we live in (2/22/2010 12:30:49 AM)

then I agree
here they like numbers....because it gives them goverment support. The helpers focus on their research..not on the humans anymore.

Anerin:

Thank you for reaching out to someone in need.

I know it did not go well this time....

In my life- there have been incidents where I was reached out to and reached out.   I am blessed.
Sometimes those memories keeps a person going.

You are welcome in my town- neck of the woods any day.

Know that there are still some good people around.  Maybe not alot- but the whole world is not completely mad as of 2010.

Hold your chin up high.

:-)

Vendaval -> RE: What a shitt society we live in (2/23/2010 4:51:00 PM)

Aneriin,

Your behavior was heroic and your intent very noble.  Doing the right thing is seldom easy or without cost.  Take good care of your good self.  I am sorry that the PTSD came back and can sympathize, part of my job description requires dealing with people who are drunk/high/crazy.  And yes, it is often the people with military and/or medical training who step into help in those situations.

Warm regards,

Vendaval
