You helped someone? That's odd I've seen a few tolchocked beaten and burend but never seen a soul make a move to help them. Why I remember the one time at school me and a droog of mine had a young devotchka whom we had known for a short time well I was bored and feeling in need of a bit of ultraviolence so my droog held her down while I outed a lighter and heated up my old britva and burned her she cried and creeched out but none came for her. Plenty saw, we did it on the floor in the hall way there were dozens in the hallway siting at tabels studying and what not. Some looked up at first but all became very interested in there books or computers really fast after a while my fun was done she asked how she would explain the marks at work but all was well the bar is dark and few notice. Another time I was chassing this chick I knew around campus kind of like a game she ran looking all distressed and crying and I followed. She said she was shocked no one helped her she made eye contact with people and they just look away and walked faster it was hilarious her sense of safety was shattered she wont ever feel the same again.

You seem to have your heart in the right place, so kudos for that. But yeah, society, humanity in general, is a stinking garbage heap. If I were wealthy, I'd buy an island, there'd be few that would be allowed on it.

In general? I totally agree with you. I'd go to your island, irregardless of the possibility of your becoming a communist dictator.

I'd have Domi's armada sink your boat.

Haha what you don't have an armada of your own?

Also, *he* may have an armada, but *I* have the Spanish Inquisition, and no one expects the Spanish Inquisition.

How about quality of life... if one has to stumble over drunks and fears attacks from them as Lady Ellen described, well this is a quality of life issue in my eyes...

You'll appreciate that 'fear' is a matter of perception and media hype (unless actually attacked).

Firstly - I'm from a working class background - I'd guess Ellen is from a middle class background - which means a) I've lived among such communities (and I mean right at the heart of these communities on council estates rather than looking on from surburbia) and so I'm sort of in a position to offer an opinion based on reality and b) England is a class obsessed nation and this extends to the media who report working class crime disproportionately out of their own vested interests in painting the working classes as a pack of savages......and I'm sure you can guess the inference? the middle classes need to protect themselves and this extends to the sphere of tax and welfare. Same old - not even remotely subtle.

Actually NG, I were born in a ditch that I shared wi sixteen brothers and sisters, an all us had to eat were worms....

You do talk some genuinely insulting crap really. Me, middle class? Straight out of the factories of Birmingham and the Black Country my lot came m'dear - utter working class scum, engaged in unskilled and semi-skilled labour. I was the first in the history of the family - and I had four elder cousins, to get more than a single CSE. It was thought by my lot an achievement worthy of celebration when my cousin got his art CSE grade 3 two years earlier - himself the first to gain such high qualifications - so that when I got 8 O Levels of which only two were grade C, it was considered a miracle. Still more so when I got A levels on top.

Not so much a miracle though when the economic reality was that I'd never be able to take the place I'd been offered at Uni to do my degree. We were so middle class you see that I had to go out to work so that my younger siblings had something to eat. I worked 6 and a half days a week at manual labour mate, for low pay, and had to hand my wages over to my parents to support the household. And then of an evening I'd do college and try to get ahead despite the circumstances. When it came time to leave home because there wasnt enough room for me I had no help from anyone in raising a deposit or equipping the crap flat that I could afford. But I kept at it - and yes, 20 odd years later I'm doing OK, but lets not pretend the outcome is anything to do with silver spoons that you seem to perceive. I've worked for what I've got, inherited not a thing and had no help from some supposed middle class background.

So I suggest you keep your ideas about me to yourself, 'k?

E

LadyEllen -> RE: What a shitt society we live in (2/21/2010 1:31:00 AM)

Oh, and for what its worth I've lived in the 3rd most deprived district in the Midlands for nigh on 15 years, so I dont appreciate lectures either on how fuckin "down with the working class" you might think yourself to be compared to me - although having said that I guess a district with 25% unemployment and near universal benefit dependence doesnt count as working class anymore. And its a good thing I'm here too, given the number of lost souls who come to me for help with this or that, 'cause you see I have absolutely no sympathy with them, what with reading the Daily Mail like a good member of the middle class of course.

You sir are a prune.

Aneirin -> RE: What a shitt society we live in (2/21/2010 1:32:50 AM)

Oh, something else I remembered from the situation, the woman that was punched in the stomach was pregnant, the puncher, totally unknown, as the drinking hole was a student dive, most there were students, the idiots in the spandex suits and animal facepaint, protesting about something or other.

I always wanted to live on an island, a smaller island than this, one with fortifications and the one I always wanted was this ;

http://www.ecastles.co.uk/drakes.html

It says no longer open to the public, but thirty years ago it was, and then an adventure centre where I camped for a week, so thoroughly explored it, and decided what a fantastic place, all those lovely concrete fortifications with underground tunnels and galleries, it even has it's own cave system extending out under the sea, an interest from my past pot holing days. It  has it's own harbour and private beach. Oh it used to have a nightclub on it, but closed for obvious reasons, crappy weather made the crossing to the island prohibitive, so that died a death, stupid idea anyway.. An ideal island, near enough to civilisation if you can call it that, but far enough away and accessible only by boat or helicopter. In fact around here every headland has a fortress on it, and one a napoleanic war fortress at end of my road.

Well you do talk like it with your 'savages/violence are/is all around us' nonsense.....you should get back in that ditch and enjoy yourself.

LadyEllen -> RE: What a shitt society we live in (2/21/2010 1:40:02 AM)

Which raises another good point Aneirin, with regard to NG's ignorant blatherings and distractions and obsession with ideas about class - it isnt just "working class" youth causing the problems, though by the nature of their size as a proportion of the whole they may predominate - its a whole spectrum (as Stella I think pointed out) of people, in which it has to be said those coming from middle class and aspiring middle class backgrounds are very well represented in their misdeeds if not by their numbers. Its a youth problem tied up to socio-economics and culture, not a class problem.

and maybe you should examine why it is that you alone it would seem have such a different experience than other Brits and UK residents and why it is you feel so much more ready to project your views onto me particularly when you have such a wide range of candidates to choose from?

Fuck me.....it's like the Women's Institute of Rural Conservative England in here....

Here you are.....something for you lot to dream about.....country lanes/warm beer/Church of England/cricket/no crime/just relly heppy girls and honourable chaps and ultimately the 'proper England' which doesn't include the towns and cities........

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4yWi06wwZQ&feature=related

The first country in the world with more people living in towns yet there's a general disdain for them and town dwellers......

Aneirin -> RE: What a shitt society we live in (2/21/2010 2:02:29 AM)

The problem as I see it, is a society that is not what it was, sure violence and drink related violence is a feature of the past, but now there is something else in there too. Perhaps it is we have become a too permissive society, where everything goes and we have created laws about human rights and stuff, laws that effectively stop those with powers invested in them to keep order, yeah the police, and from a one time respecter and supporter of their role in society, experience has taught me otherwise, they are a shabby let down.

But the problem of booze in this country, its almost constant news report, it and it's effects, well my take on it, is go back to what it was before, booze available in off licences attached to pubs only, and go back to the old licensing hours. As to supermarkets, do what the Swedes do, only sell what is called Folkol, that is about 2.5 to 3% on the shelves, anything stronger one has to go to the government shop and there show identification to buy booze and only between certain times.

It is obvious the Brits cannot drink responsibly anymore, perhaps it is time to do something about it, I for one have severely cut my drinking, I don't drink at home anymore, not done that for a few years and pubs, well it usually when I am there to see a band or do a pub quiz, I am more sociable after a jar or two, for I struggle with initiating conversation when out due to I am told asd problems, and because of these problems, maybe I read more into situations than is and miss other more obvious things.

Didn't you start off by saying: "I haven't been in town for 5 years"? It can't be that obvious mate....unless the media are filling in the blanks for you during your 5 years absence. I like a beer like the next man.....can't remember the last time I saw trouble on a night out.

SaintIntensity -> RE: What a shitt society we live in (2/21/2010 2:23:07 AM)

I have lived in the centre of Manchester since feb 2006 - and can't recall a week going by without seeing a drink/violence incident - indeed, some weeks its a daily (well nightly) occurence

I lived in central Amsterdam for 4 years - only ever saw 2 incidents during that time, and one of those involved Brits - despite beer being so cheap I used to think they'd got my bill wrong!

I lived in Brussels - saw nothing

Stockholm - 2 years - zip

the the "systembollet" (sp) system in Sweden is - even for someone who drinks as little as I do - a real pain - like buying your booze from Argos - though at least its insured if you drop it on your way home (!)

Swedes were consuming on average per capita 1 litre of spirits per WEEK in the 50s so the government had to intervene - I doubt it
would be welcome here, even if it was possible to implement

mind you, the pre-arranged gang encounters near my friends place is Sussex were the most vicious I have ever seen, so I wouldnt
single cities out - its WHO not WHERE
