Point taken, I should have been a bit more clear. Both inner and outer sacrifices (which include primarily obedience) that were from the heart. I suppose one could argue that such sacrifice is more a sign of submission to the will and celebration of their god than for forgiveness. Yet there are many references to sin offerings. Or the description of Aaron laying his hands and passing the sins of the entire nation on to a live goat... Symbolic? Perhaps. Literal? I believe they believed so.
