The problem, Bill, is when people view a correlation of data as cause and effect. It wouldn't surprise me to find more liberal atheists among high IQ folk than not. To suppose, though, that high IQ leads to liberal/atheist or that being a liberal/atheist promotes high IQ is just an unsupported jump. For example, we can probably find a correlation between jazz musicians and musicians living in large cities. That doesn't mean the two are necessarily causally connected--just that big cities is where the jazz is primarily.

People choose to describe themselves as atheists for numerous reasons and arrive at that conclusion through numerous ways. The underlying characteristic that makes for this possibility is whether atheists continue to prioritize critical thinking as a valuable intellectual commodity and steer their children to being able to wield skills in that department. That usually is enough to put theism into the "questionable" box.
