ORIGINAL: Musicmystery Here's the thing--- 16 of the 17 states that pay more than they get, all except Texas, were blue states in the 2008 election. They are the ones I can understand complaining, but they aren't. 33 states---2/3 of the states!--BENEFIT from the "big government" "tax and spend" policies, and yet they're the red states screaming against it. If they succeeded in killing it, they'd immediately have less money. Are they just nuts? Ignorant? Just repeating what their leaders tell them to say? They are voting against their own self-interest. Once again, it doesnt have a fucking thing to do with whether a state is red or blue. It is highly correlated to population density because denser state tax revenues are high due to population and the presence of corporte headquarters but many allotments (eg roads, military bases) are not based on per capita standards and in fact some are intentionally geared toward low density states like military bases and research labs. New Mexico is high because of Los Alamitos for example. Here's the problem with that assessment--the money doesn't just vanish. It goes to paychecks and local services--to people living in those states. There's a reason government spending is counted as part of GDP. And that's why if suddenly a new research lab were opening in any county in the country, those people would celebrate--good times coming. ETA: I think you're misunderstanding. No one is saying those states get more because they are red. Rather, a lot of red states are benefiting from more dollars received than than they pay, ironically given those are the voices that want to see less of this.
