With a Saturday night signing, and the cooperation of a very quiet media:

Obama signs one-year extension of Patriot Act

(AP) – 5 hours ago

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama has signed a one-year extension of several provisions in the nation's main counterterrorism law, the Patriot Act.Provisions in the measure would have expired on Sunday without Obama's signature Saturday.

The act, which was adopted in the weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks, expands the government's ability to monitor Americans in the name of national security.Three sections of the Patriot Act that stay in force will:

_Authorize court-approved roving wiretaps that permit surveillance on multiple phones.

_Allow court-approved seizure of records and property in anti-terrorism operations.

_Permit surveillance against a so-called lone wolf, a non-U.S. citizen engaged in
terrorism who may not be part of a recognized terrorist group.

Obama's signature comes after the House voted 315 to 97 Thursday to extend the measure.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again (and again, and again...) I do not like Bush's policies, whether they're adopted by Bush or Obama.

Why the righties claim that he's a wild-eyed Socialist while he continues Bush's policies... weird country.

Hmmm... Not sure if it is all about him being a socialist or not (I don't think he is). I think it is more about the platforms that were proclaimed before election, that keep falling by the wayside. Perhaps, even that while Bush was lambasted after this one by the left, it goes pretty quiet when Obama does the same thing.

I am just glad that they stripped out that goofy amendment that was slipped in a couple days ago (the one about prosecuting CIA operatives for making a terrorist feel uncomfortable).

My take on it is that this proves that Bush was unjustly demonized for many of his policies. This shows how even Bush's harshest critics such as Barack Obama would have done many of the same things that Bush did had they been in his shoes and seen the intelligence reports that Bush did.

Else, why does Obama finds this bill necessary

Does it occur to you that, by saying this (and following the logic back to the nucleus), your premise must begin with the presumption that anything that Obama does is politically the correct decision?

Exactly. So now we can expect Sanity to fully acknowledge that Obama is 100% correct in everything that he has done to this date in time.

How could this be the lone exception to the rule?

Why are conservatives so stupid? As well as socially inept?

Nope.  Barack Obama may have been a harsh critic of Bush while campaigning.  But he sure isn't as a leader.

My take is that Bush was unafraid to break precedent and try wild new things.  Obama isn't - he doesn't have the guts to chart a different course and just continues old policies.

Have you ever hurled non mocking insults? They tend to be rather impotent. Obviously you have not read much of the "works" of Sanity.

Here is a person that criticizes the majority of the decisions that Obama has ever made, but for some reason if an Obama decision supports a prior one made by Bush it is now viewed as being correct and authentic.

See how dumb these Conservatives are? It is hard for them to realize how often they contradict themselves when they feel they are actually making some sort of grandiose and earth shattering discovery.

Why must we liberals be so condescending when dealing with these types? It would be disingenuous to treat them in any other fashion.

And You...

Do you think this is a correct choice for BHO to take. Or have you too changed your mind and now support the Patroit Act?

I never have supported all of the measures in the Patriot Act. I believe it is a mistake to have approved it without seriously altering the original act. It has been reinstated for only one year. Hopefully it will be readdressed in the future.

There are many different things that are being dealt with at this given time. Prioritizing these items is an obvious task of the President. Do I feel more comfortable with Obama overseeing the scope of how the Patriot Act will be utilized than the previous administration...Hell yeah!!!

It will come up again in a year and hopefully at that time it will be corrected.

Absolutely but it is not them...it is the 'powers behind the throne.' They are all just following orders. You see now...you are not a 'Patriot' if you don't vote for this. It is our congress consenting to the early stages of the coming fascism.

Looks like Obama will be praying alone this Friday down the Mosque; imagine being ostracised by your fellow believers as well as all the right thinking Christian folk you serve.

Or have we dropped "he's a Muslim" these days? Its difficult to keep up with these things.

There has been a sunset clause built into every incarnation of this awful law.  Somehow, that didn't seem to have the same "oh well, we'll fix it next year" anti-anxiety effect we are seeing now.

Don't get your hopes up, anyway.  The Dems are going to waste their opportunity to address this by spending all their time not getting health care passed, and then not getting re-elected.

Of course national defense doesnt have a fucking thing to do with socialism. But why not throw in a non-sequiter for the hell of it.
