They filter the water three times (including an attempt to get the fluorine) to get the most "pure" taste for the coffee. If you want burnt beans, go for Dunkin Doughnuts. The new machines aren't helping either though.

Politically speaking, Starbucks is doing what they're doing because it's advantageous to get free press. Someone just happened to make it happen for them. Starbucks is a very liberal company AND they've continuously offered an ability for partners to ship their weekly benefit of coffee or tea to soldiers who are deployed abroad. They support and have always supported constitutional rights and to actively make a stand against a state upheld right, will only result in major backlash. A lot more backlash than if they simply continue their own policy to keep with state and local laws.

Partners are not allowed to carry (open or concealed) while on shift.

What I found interesting in the article is the concept that open-carry is potentially more harmful than concealed carry. I fail to see that logic. I'd much rather be able to see who has a gun and who is reaching for that gun.

So would every criminal...

It makes everything so much simpler and safer for them.

USPS taken OFF BOOK, US taken OFF THE GOLD STANDARD, ESCALATION OF VIET NAM, among other peccadillos yeah, republican, not conservative--------we find those are two entirely different things and not at all synonomous.

Bennie D'Israeli and Stanley Baldwin (with a little David Lloyd George tossed in)

He also got you out of Vietnam pulled the plug on the insane amounts of money NASA was pissing away to chase after unicorns, and started building bridges with China and the USSR. That wasn't conservative?
(I was forgetting the gold standard thing was him though. Fair point.)

Off-topic(sort of) but a funny Starbucks story...this happened this morning,no lie...I walk into the local Starbucks,I'm helping a friend and staying at her place...so this isn't my Starbucks...anyway I order my usual Quad-vent cappuccino, the young man asks me if I mean 4 shots of espresso.....now being as the only way I know to make a cappuccino is with espresso...and quad means 4(especially in Starbuckese)...I quite naturally asked him when exactly did Starbucks start selling Jack Daniel's.....of course I meant espresso you twit.....it's what you freakin sell isn't it?
By the way,the only persons carrying openly in this particular Starbucks were the two N.C. State Troopers having their morning cup of joe.

If the law permits, it makes sense for a retail biz to permit customers into the stores to make their purchases. Why this is even news is surprising.

Maybe their "liberal" reputation came from offering all their employees, even the part time ones, health insurance.

Starbucks has a "liberal" reputation?
I thought they had a "reputation" for bad tasting coffee! And they should "take a stand", on the side of freedom!

They make a big deal of using fair trade supplies, so they're liberal. (In American terms, that probably makes them Anarcho-Syndicalists, in fact.) Raising the price of coffee in America to pay the packagers something approaching a slave wage instead of a pittance? Liberal.

A private business can restrict the possession of firearms on their property in many jurisdictions. I think it's unfortunate that these groups likes the anti gun (and anti-Constitution) group in the article choose to go beyond the basic issue at hand and make a private business owner a pawn in their argument. They sure seem to be married to free speech aspects of the Constitution. Too bad the rest of document doesn't mean as much to them.

WHOA!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHO made this an issue and made a private business a pawn in their argument?

There would have been no anti-gun demonstrations if there were not the organized attempts by open-carry advocates to make an issue of it.

Again... from the article... one more time:

"Now, gun control advocates are protesting the policy. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, launched a petition drive demanding that the company "offer espresso shots, not gunshots" and declare its coffeehouses "gun-free zones." And Wednesday, that group delivered 28,000 signatures to the coffee giant's headquarters in Seattle."

Try to keep up.

Being among the first to offer all partners (see: employees) benefits including health care, tuition reimbursement, and stock options. Being among the first to offer domestic partner benefits. Hell, being the employer of the man who started the Detroit AIDS walk and Step-Out. Sponsoring every AIDS Walk event in the US. Providing scholarships as an incentive for partners to remain loyal and grow within the company.

Nope none of these things makes Starbucks "liberal"...it's the limited fair trade practices.

Providing the means to build on site health care and education to farming communities that provide the beans that Starbucks sells, that's not part of it either. Paying far more than ANY other American coffee company would even consider...nope that's not part of it either.

Being a pioneering company for corporate responsibility programs and contribution thousands upon thousands of dollars annually to different domestic charities. NONE of that has anything to do with Starbucks being a liberal company to work for.

Starbucks is rated among the highest employee satisfaction in the country. There's a reason for it.

I wouldn't know what a quad vent cappuccino is either, although it sounds very space age.

It's the gob vent cappuccino you probably have to be weary of next time he serves you.

Quite frightening to know that childish types will carry their guns in a place they perceive to be liberal.

"Dad why does that man have a gun?"
"Well he's preserving his right to carry guns in dangerous places, such as Starbucks."

Please explain to me how exercising one's right to openly carry is any different than exercising one's right to gather and protest? Each require permits and a have a governmental means of enforcement.

Your right to free speech is and has been upheld by citizens who choose to carry their weapons. Try thanking them for it next time.

Oh this is a protest, I thought it was just a bunch of people making a point against what they wrongly perceive to be a symbol of liberalism.

So they are going to get a permit to protest every time they want a cup of coffee, could get rather inconvenient that notion.

I have to thank gun owners now simply for the act of carrying weapons, have you any idea how ridiculous that sounds? Were these the ones that fought for my rights to free speech i.e. Mr Jones and his equaliser? I thought it was about his personal protection not him keeping my right to free speech? Look I wrote something controversial and not a gun owner in sight to protect me.

Yeah I'll do that right after you finish with all the pointless posturing about freedom of speech.

It's kind of difficult to misinterpret a couple of lines of text, perhaps you should have put more effort into the message you wanted to get across.

Tell me when your finished with the colouring-in books and get back to me with better clarity about what you mean.

Oh you poor, enslaved subjects of HM's government.  Will freedom ever come to you?

No permits are required here for an individual citizen to exercise their god-given rights.

(Now if you want to have a parade, block a street, or use amplification equipment, you need to pay your fees and prove enough porta-shitters will be provided, but those are separate issues)

I won't be one of those carrying a handgun, but it certainly doesn't make me nervous when I see it here and there. A would be armed robber will also see it..I for one feel safer.

Such as the right to drink coffee without a intimidating presence? Bank robbers use guns for show also, they don't have to fire them just the threat is enough. So next time you have an argument with someone displaying a gun perhaps they are not displaying it for reasons of personal protection but instead as an implicit threat of violence. The coffee is too cold or not enough change was given so the man goes up to the counter, raising his voice slightly. Is this a threat or a legitimate complaint, should the person behind the counter be concerned for his safety? Should the person open of the till to give back that change the man feels is owed to him? Sure it's all fun and games until you get into the real world where silly pointless disputes happen.

Who's god and which rights? Was gun ownership mentioned in the bible, please cite passage. I forget.

So there is limitations to your freedom of speech then, it's only free if it's one person at a time. I'll complain about the war this week and Jim Smith can have his allotted time next week. Like to see how you deal with spontaneous union disputes, such as those standing on a picket-line without a permit to do so.

I pick up nasty viruses from Bible sites, SL4, but a rough quote of Jesus is, "let him who hath no sword sell his garment to buy one."

Permits are easy if you have appropriate toilet arrangements.  The Constitution does not guarantee a right to piss in the neighbors bushes.

I don't think we need to be trying to structure our society around the comfort level of people who are afraid an unloaded gun is suddenly going to go off and kill everyone in the room.  Why, there is a gun three feet away fro where I'm typing, and I'm still alive!
